Life in Thaiville - An oops

Featured Replies

It's just a little slice of life that those of us with engineering backgrounds might find humorous.

We've seen the telecommunications towers sprouting up like mushrooms. We also haven't seen them toppling over or tilted at normal weird angles. That is probably because they are built to international specs by people rolling in baht that strongly dislike seeing their money poured down the storm drains.

Well, big piles of triple galvanized steel always arrests my attention. Call me a fetishist. So I stopped to check it out. Whoah! 12 foot deep hole, fifteen feet by fifteen feet. 1 inch bar on 6 inch centers basket at the bottom. Some serious shitte coming down here, quadrilateral no less. Onto the basket they build the anchor footings and a couple of days later we have a concrete plug sticking 2 feet above ground, obvious impacted and done up spiff spiff max mak.

Except the steel sticking up out of the plug is 6 inch angle and the large steel in the pile is 8 inch. The structural engineers out there reading this just had a collective facepalm.

While these towers usually grow faster than green stripes in the middle of rainy season, this one sort of stopped. It's been 10 days now. They are rapidly loosing the chance of getting it busted before the major hardening is in full effect, What they plan to do with such a sterling example of inertia is anybodies guess.
