if you have i'm assuming you do a pc or use of then google translate differs with some of the ? translations,not able to read thai or for that matter speak it except for greet or go away i wish you well.

Thanks for that, Mole. However, I am confused by ญวน. I had thought that this referred to an historic empire, much of which was within Vietnam's current borders. If the dictionary compilers mean (modern) Vietnamese why didn't they use the more obvious เวียดนาม?

As for คำโบราณ : archaic - does that mean that the word has largely fallen out of use (as in English words such as egads, forsooth, prithee) and is only used for special effect - usually comic? Or is it simple seen as an ancient word which is still used in Thai.

(For what it's worth, I attach a list of all words classified as คำโบราณ in the RID.)

Archaic words, yes, but not comic at all. The words are still in use in certain settings, but not usually in normal speech because other words would normally be used instead. Wikipedia explains the distinction between archaic คำโบราณ and obsolete คำที่เลิกใช้แล้ว words.

Literally คำโบราณ means "ancient word", while คำที่เลิกใช้แล้ว "word not in used anymore".

Just to validate Khun Mole's answer, it might be helpful to look at the definition given by the Royal Institute Dictionary itself:

ญวน ๑ น. ชื่อประเทศและชนชาติหนึ่งอยู่ทางทิศใต้ของประเทศจีน และทาง ทิศตะวันออกของประเทศลาวและเขมร, ปัจจุบันเรียกว่า ประเทศ เวียดนาม.

Clearly, then, when the dictionary says ญวน it means "Vietnamese".

A similar analogy is anything "English/England" is synonymous with "British/Britain", although England is only a part of UK.

I presume the Thais has been calling the Viets as "Yuan" since antiquity.
