9,074 new positions opened by Public Health Ministry



BANGKOK, 23July 2014 (NNT) - Yesterday (22nd July 2014) at the National Council for Peace and Order's (NCPO) 7th weekly meeting, it was confirmed that the committee had agreed to the Public Health Ministry's request for 9,074 new positions for government officers in their sector, and will now start filling the positions from the 29th August 2014, placing major emphasis on positions in poor and distant rural areas and places with high workloads.

The Permanent Secretary for Public Health Dr. Narong Sahametapat, said that the ministry had proposed the allocation of the new positions at the Ministry of Public Health to the NCPO for approval; the request has been sent twice, once for 2014 openings and again for 2015 openings.

For 2014, the ministry has asked for an acceptance of 9,074 applicants, who are separated into many types of professions, such as nurses at 7,547 positions, and recently graduated medical students receiving scholarships for another 1,527 positions. The documents regarding the openings will be sent to each province to select candidates for their department. The provinces located in poor rural areas will be the first to nominate their candidates.

In 2015, another 7,547 will be opened, for which the NCPO has ordered the Ministry of Public Health to improve their public health system, for example in the areas of service, improvement of their personnel, and making sure they allocate their human resources to the best possible position and location. To make sure that the public receives the best service possible, the service must be fair and equal among all.

Yes, well good luck with that. Unfortunately many young grads prefer injecting botox into wrinkly old butts at Sukhumvit clinics rather than contemplating serving the nation in rural and remote health provision.

Guess they will be needing a few hundred more generals to lead them.

So more than 16,000 qualified people are going to appear out of nowhere over the next two years to fill these positions? What are they all doing now?

Well, cancel the submarine purchase proposals and eliminate the already functioning submarine base, and I guess these positions could be paid for. I'm sure the Thai people would prefer more medical facilities than navy toys.

A lot of youngsters won't fancy moving to remote rural areas, but if I understand it correctly, often people will apply for them with the intention of later getting a transfer to a more desirable location. Perhaps why the rural job vacancies are being filled first. And a government job does still have attractions for Thai people.

Whether there are suitable applicants or not, I have no idea. I assume there is a med school somewhere, turning out grads every year.

One thing I do hope, is that there is a genuine interview process and that applicants aren't effectively forced to "buy" the positions. I don't think that happens quite so much in areas like nursing and teaching, and I hope it doesn't happen with these jobs.
