Can you enter Thailand on passport only and then get a visa from the embassy in Bangkok

Featured Replies

My daughter is a UK citizen, living and working in the Maldives. She and her Maldivian boyfriend want to go to Thailand. Without a passport, my daughter is allowed a 30 day stay, but I understand anyone from the Maldives is only granted 15 days.

Does anyone know if they can get a visa after arrival from the Thai Embassy in Bangkok and how long they would be able to stay? Is there any way they can extend their visit?

Thanks.

Jackie

there is no thai embassy in bangkok. get her visa before u leave if u need one

With passport but no visa she will get a 30 day visa exemption if arriving by air, if she wants longer she will need visa before she leaves

Her boyfriend does not qualify for visa-exempt entry. He will need a visa.

This is a handy resource for checking on all variations of visa requirements for travel based on origin, destination, nationality, transit points, etc..

without a return ticket within 30 days of arriving in Bangkok she might not be able to board the plane at the departure airport. And he would require a visa before departing

He can get a 15 day visa on arrival that will cost 1000 baht and will require a ticket out of the country within those 15 days.

They both should get tourist visas before traveling.

ubonjoe got it.

Visa on arrival (VOA), 15 days for the Maldives.

And due to the information on the site there is NO legal way to extend the boyfriends stay based on VOA.

You are totally mixing up your passports/visas/embassies/government offices.

Without a "passport" you daughter would not be allowed to travel at all; without a VISA she gets 30 days.

A country does not have an embassy in their own country. Just as there is no UK embassy in the UK, there is no Thai embassy in Thailand. Thailand has an immigration office in Thailand.

It looks like the latest version of the IATA travel advisory website has lost some of the facts while swapping the previous rather simple data input interface for a much more complex one. Before one just plugged in your nationality, passport, origin, destination and any layovers and it gave a quick and accurate response as to visa requirements.

This new interface asks for all sorts of details such as carrier, specific dates, duration of stay, gender and age of passenger. I plugged in a 25 year old Maldivian male staying for a month and it was a simple 'visa required' which is correct for a 30-day visit but didn't mention the 15 non-extendable VoA option. Before I call their new website out, I will try a similar passenger detail but only staying for 14 days and see of it correctly comes up with the VoA option. I am on a very restricted bandwidth connection if anyone else wants to give it a shot.

I don't like that one because of all the the extra info needed. And it only tells you it your documents are suitable for trip.

This one is better: http://www.staralliance.com/en/services/visa-and-health/

She must have a passport to enter Thailand ... and probably to fly out of Maldives. There is no Thai Embassy in Thailand.

There is no more a Thai embassy in Bangkok than there is a UK embassy in London. You are probably thinking of immigration. It would make more sense if he applied in the Maldives before leaving; the consulate is in Male.

There is a honorary Thai consulate in the Maldives. http://www.thaiconsulate.com.mv/

They can apply for tourist visas there.

According to the OP she does not have a passport. "Without a passport, my daughter is allowed a 30 day stay, but I understand anyone from the Maldives is only granted 15 days."

I think he meant visa.

"You are probably thinking of immigration"

And immigrations does not issue visas.

A country does not have an embassy in their own country. Just as there is no UK embassy in the UK, there is no Thai embassy in Thailand. Thailand has an immigration office in Thailand.

Perfectly right, I must always laugh at people talking about Thai embassy in Thailand.

An Embassy is a representation of ones country in an alien country.

OK I think we've realised that our OP has made a couple of errors, no need to rub it in. I think we all understand what was meant.

An post insulting other members has been removed.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

I always laugh at people who just keep repeating the same information that has been stated several hours previously.

I advise you to listen to Ubonjoe others dismiss.
