Of course, one or two people on here won't have to worry about any of this nonsense seeing as they're widely accepted as Thai and can just call up one or more of their contacts at the higher echelons of the Thai establishment and entertainment industry and have the offending police officer banished to deepest, darkest Hat Yai.

It been confirmed in the last few hours dear boy that one doesnt need to carry a passport so cant see much point of this thread carrying on

As this topic is now academic as an immigration head in BKK has come out with an announcement that it is not required to carry with you at all times.  So will close this one and you can join in on the updated news.
