I need to send some documents to an embassy in Vietnam and get them back. They suggested to enclose cash in the envelope to pay for the return shipping. I am reluctant of doing so, as I dont want it to get "lost" in transit.

What could I do to avoid putting cash in the envelope?

Just an idea, but if you're in Bangkok buy current Vietnamese stamps at a stamp dealer and enclose them.  There are also International Reply Coupons, but I don't know if the Thai and Vietnamese Post Offices  are members.  Or perhaps prepay with Paypal?
