PHUKET: -- Kamala Tambon Administration Organisation (OrBorTor) is to set up a call centre opposite Kamala Police Station with space for 20 vehicles.

The OrBorTor sent letters to 11 different hotels in Kamala, asking them to allocate space for taxis but only two agreed – the Thavorn Beach Hotel and the Swissotel.

Kamala has 18 different taxi groups comprising 169 vehicles – minibuses, tuk-tuks, SUVs, cars and motorbikes.

Of these, 67 have green plates and 14 have yellow plates. The remaining half – 84 vehicles – are unlicensed “black-plate” vehicles.

“So far, no one is breaking the rules in our area [by setting up taxi stands on public land],” OrBorTor clerk (palad) Chinnadit Tantipanwadee told The Phuket News. “We are going to set up the Taxi Call Centre very soon.

“We are not sure when it will be ready, but the plan has been approved,” he said. “This will not be for meter taxis. The people attached to the call centre will be able to drive only to and from Kamala area, and will have to join a queue for passengers.

“Those who prefer to switch to driving meter taxis can pick up anyone anywhere on the island.”

Therein lies the problem.  These groups collude and do not allow any outside interference, nor competition.

So you would prefer one group? Is that not called a monopoly? An often outlawed business tactic.

They set up call centres years ago when I lived in Chalong. Taxi arrived with meter on and proceeded to take us the 'pretty route'. So worked out same price as a tuk tuk. Used one once. Never again.

Simply amazing 2014 , and a simple thing like getting a Taxi is a hassle..

Simply amazing 2014 and a country still must have a military intervention (again) because they can't be trusted to run themselves. I'd be embarrassed if I were Thai.

Actually, there should be no group, simply a number of individual people offering a service and operating under the law.  What's the point of a group?  Insurance benefits?

This is such a joke. I'm a resident of Kamala and am very familiar with everything mentioned here. Basically the OrBorTor is running the taxi mafia in Kamala. They go around and push hotels and local businesses to use the black taxis. This is another example of them not willing to give up the current revenue stream this is providing but quickly setting up something so the system can remain (but this time with less taxi stands). I'm sure they will indeed make it hard for taxi meters to operate in Kamala.

I mean it's really a joke that they mention green and black plates operating since both is an illegal practice. Only yellow plates are allowed to operate as taxis.

Hopefully NCPO realizes all this and veto's this project and allows only an island-wide call centre for meter taxis only..

So you don't like groups of business operators. You don't want a single corporation. And now you want to stop the ability of a Thai national to succeed and grow his business beyond a single taxi. What are the benefits of a group? Shared and distributed map coverage for improved service, a motor pool of properly maintained equipment, insurance discounts reducing expenses that can be passed to the consumer, increased profitability, providing employment to local citizens, regulation standards, service continuity, greater hours of operation, benefiting local economy etc. etc.
