Surin urges NCPO to make decisions quickly
By Digital Content

BANGKOK, Aug 9 - Former secretary-general of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Surin Pitsuwan has urged the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) to make decisions on issues, especially those related to law, quickly and prudently which would not affect growth in the regional grouping.

Speaking during a seminar celebrating the 47th anniversary of ASEAN founding on Friday at the Foreign Affairs Ministry headquarters, Mr Surin said that although Thailand would still not have an elected government at the implementation of ASEAN Community (AC), due to be launched end of 2015, there was still no problem.

However, Thai authorities must prove to the international community that they could “run the country under the present circumstances” and if their works are seen as not good enough, there could be pressure from foreign countries, said Mr Surin.

“While the NCPO is ruling the country now, it should speed up solving problems including human trafficking, migration, narcotics and transnational crimes,” said Mr Surin.

“Thailand is now ranked number two in trade among ASEAN members and problems could widen if these problems are left unsolved,” he added.

He said Thailand’s fellow members in ASEAN wanted to see smooth management in the kingdom before the implementation of the AEC and they are offering moral support so that the situation in this country could return to normal soon. (MCOT online news)

Despite the heightened price, people have been placing orders for garlands of fresh jasmine flowers to give to their mothers on Mother's Day, said sellers. Prices of flower garlands range from 50 baht to 400 baht, depending on the complexity of the pattern. Plain jasmine garlands are also popular, costing 100 baht each.

BOT: There is plenty of liquidity to go around at present

BANGKOK, 9 August 2014 (NNT) – The Bank of Thailand has asserted there is enough liquidity among commercial banks to facilitate lending and investment as the Thai economy gains momentum.

BOT spokesperson Rung Mallikamas said banks also had enough liquidity to support the future growth of lending and investments by the state and private sectors. She disclosed that as of Thursday, there was as much as 4.5 trillion baht of excess liquidity in the system, and it would take a long time for this amount to become thinly spread.

This is because private sector investment will require a lengthy period until it fully recovers; at the same time, banks are being cautious in approving certain types of loans, such as personal loans. Automobile hire purchase is still slowing down due to the aftereffects of the first car buyers program.

Ms. Rung explained that competition between financial institutes has eased because the institutes have re-prioritized and were placing emphasis on the segments of the population that had so far not been able to access capital sources.

Prayuth calls people to do good deeds as dedication to the Queen on her birthday

8-9-2014-3-02-54-PM-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) chief call for the people to do good deeds for the country and dedicate to Her Majesty the Queen on her birthday anniversary.

Gen Prayuth said as the Queen’s birthday is coming near on August 12, the people could help to show their loyalty by doing good deeds, and making merits and dedicated to the Queen.

He also reported of progresses in many tasks of the NCPO while asking the people to be patient if some have not yet been accomplished.

But what he made clear is corruption which must be eliminated and is his main task to do.

He said the people could help by giving information and he will act drastically and immediately.

He cautioned all officials no matter they be civil servants, police, and military personnel to stop, otherwise they be punished, fired and prosecuted.

He also vowed to urgently restore Thailand’s economic confidence both inside and outside of the country in order to attract investment and move the economy forward.

The NCPO and all government agencies were working together in stimulating the economy by explaining the situation in Thailand to foreign countries such as Germany and ASEAN member countries, he said.

Apart from urgently restoring confidence, he was pushing for improvements to infrastructure systems in Thailand.

The Ministry of Transport was implementing the strategies in line with the country’s economic growth rate.

The first priority is aimed at connecting transportation networks in Bangkok and the vicinities which now is drawing attention from ASEAN.

Touching on the deadly Ebola epidemic, Gen Prayuth said he has has ordered the Ministry of Public Health and relevant institutions to monitor visitor health closely and prepare for a possible Ebola epidemic.

The Ministry of Transport has been ordered to maintain a strict inspection of all passengers arriving in Thailand, he said.

On politics, Gen Prayuth said people involved in political conflicts should not attempt to involve the monarchy in their disputes.

He said that the monarchy had been cited improperly, thus undermining the beloved institution of the people.

He said authorities has the names of a handful of these ill-intentioned people and were working with countries where these people stay to extradite them for trial.

But he admitted that bringing this certain group of people back for trial is not an easy task as these countries have no law to specify the guilts.

He then identified some of these people who are wanted as Choopong Thithuan, Anek Chaichana, Saneh Thinsaen, Amnuay Kaewchompoo and Ongart Thanakamolnan.

On the rice scheme, Gen Prayuth disclosed that China this month ordered 100,000 tons of broken rice from Thailand.

It also asked Thailand to send samples of rice in the stock for it to check so that it could place more orders.

China wants to buy rice from Thailand as its regards that rice is a symbol of strong cultural relation between the two countries.
