Buying a pet squirrel

My son when aged 7 found a young emaciated squirrel.He nursed it in to a healthy pet,it tought him good values for the rest of his life,the squirrel was free to come and go,he never ventured too far and was never caged.That was nearly 3 years ago,unfortunatly he got sick and the vet put him to sleep.

I would love to get him a new wee friend,any suggestions where I could buy one?

I would take a look at the pet shops at Theprasit market.

At the east end of the market (nearest the Outlet Mall), behind the food stalls, there is a row of pet shops. If they don't have what you are after they may be able to point you in the right direction.

Some of these pet shops are open every day, not just on market days.

Umm how about adopting a lovely little doggie instead? Something that is supposed to live in a house rather than a wild animal? Something small, an older one, teach the lad about the throw away culture of thailand and how it is good to take ownership and responsibility. Or a older cat, only a few years left?

Buying animals in Thailand not such a great lesson to teach a kid, where as adopting animals, especially the older ones with less hope of finding a new home, teaches very positive things. I would guess you might even find a squirrel or sugar glider in the adoption centers as well is you look hard enough - the country is crawling with animals bought from the animal shops and chucked away as soon as the owners gets bored with them.

if you can not find a shelter with what you want, then try to 2nd hand adverts - at least buying an older pet from here will prevent that animal being flushed down a toilet or what have you in the near future when the owner is finally bored of it and lost patience trying to get their money back,

I have trees just outside my condo balcony and i love to watch the white squirrels run around. Not sure they would make good pets for a child though.

He did well to look after the squirrel, they are notoriously hard to keep alive as abandoned little ones, well done to your son

We found 2 and managed about 10 days with both, pneumonia got the poor things.

Better that you get a squirrel and its looked after, than a pet shop sells it to someone incompetent.

Adopt, don't shop please

Our neighbor did just that and adopted a poor little doggie.

Had to pay the landlord 30,000 baht this week to replace the furniture it ate when she was out.

Not an expert, but the family bought some while i was away. The one thing that is most important is you have to spend time bonding with them. That way they will have a life and be free to roam around the house, yard etc. If you don't bond with them them they will have to be kept as prisoners in a cage for the rest of their lives. This takes a lot of time and patience.

It is best to NOT buy wild animals in the first place, but I think the squirrels would be reasonably happy as a family pet, but not as prisoners.

Thepprasit market is not that great, we bought 2 hedgehogs (another story) for 900 each and found out they were about 400 in the pet shop.

(PS anyone know where to get these small animals neutered?)
