Rescue personnel prepare Ms Somnow's body for removal to the hospital.

PHUKET: -- A Mother’s Day reunion appears to have gone sadly wrong yesterday, with a 73-year-old woman ending up drowned in a klong near her home.

At 7am today (August 13) Phuket Town police were called after a body was retrieved from a klong next to Saphan Rom 2 Community on Srisuthat Rd, on Koh Sirey.

When police and rescue workers arrived they found a crowd gathered around the victim, who was lying face up on a bridge over the klong, covered in mud. Checking the body, they found no evidence of foul play.

Yuthtana Lowlopburi, 27, who introduced himself as the nephew of Somnow Koonchu, the dead woman, told police that he and Ms Somnow's children had visited her the previous day to pay their respects on Mother's Day.

They had a party, he went on, during which alcohol was enjoyed.

“ She [Ms Somnow] was drunk. I had to carry her into her house last night,” Mr Yuthtana said.

Neighbours spotted the body in the klong at about 6am and pulled Ms Somnow out of the water, placing her remains on a nearby bridge, then called the police.

Mr Yuthtana said he thought his aunt must have got up to go to the bathroom during the night, then lost her balance and fell into the klong, which was right next to her home.

An autopsy will be carried out to establish cause of death but police have labelled Ms Somnow's death as an accident.
