Providing you are eligible, there is nothing stopping you/your employer applying now for a One year Extension of Permission to Stay at your local Thai Immigration Department, based on Employment (National Police Order 327/2557 Case 2.1).

The days are long gone where Extensions were locked to Work Permits or Vice Versa.

I have been offered a job which means I have to get non- b from Vientianne - that's not a problem - My situation is that my passport runs out in January although I have been in person to Bangkok and renewed my passport and have receipt to prove this ( they say 6-9 weeks to get new passport back ) will there be any problem 1- getting into Laos to go to embassy 2- getting my non b 3- getting back into Thailand ? I can pick up my passport only in BK and then hopefully get visa transferred to new passport ( at a cost I guess) - can anyone help/ advise? Thanks

You didn't say which nationality you are. But judging by your waiting time I would surmise British? I am British and I am in similar position - my Tourist visa extension runs out on the 3 September and I should hopefully pick up my new passport in the next 2 weeks (already gone by the 6 week waiting period) and the 3 rd of September is the last day of the 9 weeks! Whatever time I have left from pick-up to the leaving date I will also have to swap stamps to my new passport. Then I have to go to Vientiane for a Tourist Visa (which will technically be on a back to back proper TV) come back to Thailand and then process my non-B and make the same run again probably towards the end of September. Sorry here's my point -- are you trying to travel on your old passport while waiting for your new one?? If so I don't think your old passport is valid while new one is being processed. Perhaps someone could clear this up as I was told to not travel while waiting for new passport as old one is taken out of the system. It can only be used for ID purposes and at Immigration Office.

I have no choice - as if I overstay I get fined and pay - or try to explain to Laos immigration and Thai immigration for my non b and trying to get back in that I have receipt for new passport and see what happens - any advice would be most helpful - and yes I'm British

If you passport has not been stamped as cancelled or anything, you can travel with it. Otherwise you will need and Emergency Travel Document.

Savannakhet is a better destination than Vientane, for faster and better service.

1) Your British Passport is now invalid for travel and according to some reports may well show as cancelled in Border Databases.

2) You have less than 6 months validity on your passport so Laos, amongst many other countries will not admit you.

Unfortunately the train wreck of a fiasco that the British Government has created is currently delivering average waits of 10 weeks from application to collection in BKK.

Were you to have a valid visa in your passport, it cannot be transferred to a new passport, but remains valid in the old one.

Only Re-entry permits and Extensions of Permission to stay can be transferred.

Correct, your current British Passport is unfortunately invalid for travel and this forum has had reports of members being refused exit from Thailand (and also some getting away with it); no one knows what HMPO does, but it appears that thye enter you into some kind of internationally visible data base within just a few days of taking your application payment.

The current average delay for British Passport issue is  currently averaging out at an appallingly long 10 weeks (the 6-9 weeks quoted is from receipt at HMPO Liverpool not application at trendy and to date it's normally been the larger number of weeks)..

As your Tourist Visa Extension will have come to an end, then there is nothing you need to transfer, you can just show both passports on the border at exit.

Welcome to the train wreck.

Thanks for the info and it looks like I will overstay by about a week -- is this such a great tragedy or is there some way to inform immigration before that I am waiting for a new passport (it states that reason on my TM 7)? I did meet 3 people on July 2 when I was at trendy who had waited only 6 weeks. That got my hopes up but this news of 10 weeks -- typical. So what you are saying is as soon as I get my passport head for Laos? I had heard that you can leave Thailand at the border with the 2 passports and Laos will only be interested the new passport for their visa stamp. Yeah it is a quagmire and the only thing that helps is good sound information.
