Approval to be sought for GMO maize and tapioca cultivation tests

BANGKOK: -- The Agricultural Extension Department will seek government’s approval for research on genetically-modified organism (GMO) cash crops such as maize and tapioca as an integral part of Thailand’s long-term food security strategy to meet increasing global demands.

The department’s chief, Mr Olarn Pitak, said that there is an increasing global demand for the two crops but cultivation areas are limited and, therefore, it is necessary that the productivity must be increased with the introduction of crop strains which produce high yield and the promotion of off-season cultivation.

It was projected that in the next 18 years Thailand’s maize production would increase to 7.8 million tonnes from 11 million rai of farmland compared to today’s five million tonnes from 7.1 million rai of farmland whereas worldwide demand was expected to increase to 951 million tonnes per year.

Thailand’s production of tapioca amounts to 29 million tonnes annually from 8.1 million rai of farmland whereas global demand amounts to 54 million tonnes.

Meanwhile, Mr Prakit Piensiripinyo, deputy secretary-general of Animal Feeds Producers Association, suggested that the government should allow GMO crop cultivation tests to determine the advantages and disadvantages which will enable the government to decide on incorporating GMO crops in food security strategy.

He noted that soybean crops which are currently available worldwide are GMO crops.
