Thousands of teachers should get permanent contracts: Ovec

BANGKOK: -- The Office of Vocational Education Commission (Ovec) will be asking the new government to approve its plan to hire 10,000 more permanent teachers.

"We are now facing a shortage of teachers," Ovec secretary general Chaiprug Sereerak said Monday.

He said at present vocational colleges under his office's supervision had to ease the shortage by hiring temporary teachers using portions of money from budgets initially allocated for other purposes.

"If we go on like this, the colleges will continue to lose opportunities for their further development," Chaiprug said.

Chaiprug Sereerak continued to say, "But we'll only pay them 20-25,000 baht a month and make it REALLY difficult for them to get a work permit and visa." biggrin.png thumbsup.gif

Oh, wait a minute, that's what we do now.

More teachers are not the solution, although it may help mitigate the morass.

Not until there is a national priority for true excellence in education will Thailand progress, and not a minute before. Where I was raised the top priority of public education was not vocational training but rather turning out qualified voters.

I know that there are many problems with the Thai educational system, but one of the biggest is overcrowded classes. If hiring more teachers could reduce the class sizes from 50 to 30 or 35, that would be a big step in the right direction.

Plus let the kids fail. That will also create new jobs. Another serious issue might be the losing face bs.

This unwritten law by the MoE that students are not allowed to ask their teachers questions seems insane to me.

Then send their own guys who want to become English teachers to an English speaking country and let them get a real degree. When they come back, they speak English and do not lose face anymore.

I doubt they are referring to foreigners.

The OP sounds like it's talking about foreigners or independent contractors. A key word in the title is "contracts". Thai teachers aren't hired on a contract basis, are they? Edited by attrayant
