BANGKOK, Sept 11 -- The number of visitors from Europe grew by 3.7 per cent while African tourists rose even more by 4-5 per cent in the first seven months of this year, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

Juthaporn Rerngronasa, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing, said that despite the situations in Thailand, tourists still like Thailand for its natural tourist destinations, cultures and people, she said. Russians formed the lion's share of visitors from Europe, followed by French, Britons and Germans.

Their numbers grew gradually. Although it was not high, they spent substantially, Ms Juthaporn said.

The numbers of tourists from the United States and the Middle East dropped by 4 per cent and 9 per cent respectively because of travel advisories about Thailand.

Ms Juthaporn said that many countries already lifted their warnings and arrivals should improve in the high season.

She also said that the TAT would actively promote Thailand among international tourists and tour operators.

Such attempts include its inviting senior executives of about 20 cruise companies in America and Europe to survey attractions and ports in Thailand in November.

Later this month, TAT will conduct road shows in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France. (MCOT online news)

as usual I stopped reading here: according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

Here is why:

nationmultimedia.com:

Average occupancy at hotels across Thailand in June dropped by 25 percent after the coup.

Bangkok, which hosts more than half of the foreigners coming into the country, posted a 14 per cent decline in visitors in the first four months of this year.

Hotels reported average room occupancy rates of 58 per cent in March, compared with 72 per cent a year earlier. Reuters

Recently, the VP of the Pattaya Tourism Association, Sin-chai Wat-tana-sat-sa-torn, addressed the current business situation for hotels and restaurants around Pattaya. Due to the recent turmoil, visitors are down by almost 80%, especially from China, Hong Kong, and Europe.

Lupartia Interesting note.and just like you i hardly believe what TAT says about increasing tourists ...!!!!!!

I don't understand what people have against Russians as I always found them the nicest, and some of the most cultured people around.

ROFLMAO

While Russians are usually good-hearted and loyal, and some of them can be cultured and polite (when educated), many of them remain very rough at the edges, confrontative and noisy, especially their lo-so.

How does she know they spent substantially? Did she follow the 7 of them?

Getting these stats is very simple indeed. Almost every country gathers this information. No need to follow anyone.

Why make such a nonsensical comment if you can't be bothered to read the article? European tourist up, while others (maybe Chinese) down, resulting in an overall drop. This is very simple maths. But obviously too difficult for some to grasp.

Typical Americans. Scared of the world even though it's safer than home. Or maybe they take their government too seriously. They need to get out more and learn to think for themselves. Not all Americans obviously, but a large proportion of them. So many of them seem brainwashed.

Last year 2013 only 13 % of Americans traveled overseas but Thailand doesn't promote the country correctly. I hear from relatives in California that they see ads about Thailand. Why? California has the largest number of Thai than any other state and is fairly warm climate. I lived in Massachusetts a cold east coast state and have never seen an ad on late nite TV or papers advertising Thailand . They should advertise in one of the colder states as a warm place to come to to get away from the harsh winters. Plus Mass and other east coast and Central USA cites have fairly well off citizens that could afford the trips here.

American tourists decreased by 4%; Middle Eastern tourists dropped by9%.

Are tourists from the ME 'typical' and even more scared?

You certainly aren't brainwashed; did you learn about 'typical' Americans from your Uncle Bob and Aunt Nan?

That is certainly 'thinking for your self' whistling.gif

Perhaps this country would be better served by working on internal issues than this hysteria it shows with regard to tourism which is a rather small contribution to the national GDP, however, it does serve to provide employment for many thousands of Thai's who would otherwise be left destitute as a result of governments failure to provide adequate national employment.

As such tourism is a political tool in order to avoid a backlash from descent from those who suffer as a direct result of a low tourist volume. Happiness to the people indeed in order to keep those in power within their ivory towers.

From my world-wide travels, every country has the good, the bad and the ugly. Fortunately, the good seems to outnumber the others. The bad and ugly are just more noticeable.

I did not know Russia was part of Europe. I thought it was part of Asia...................hmmmm and they hold the lions share of visitors. Either I am wrong or the writer of this post needs to go back to school and learn Geography.

It is a very large country and seems to straddle both, geographically and otherwise.

A cosmopolitan resident of St. Petersburg would possibly disagree that they are "Asian". A citizen living south of Irkutsk, near Mongolia, might not consider themselves "European".

I suppose it could be a discussion for the academics and perhaps there is no right or wrong in either position.

isn't that a lovely development, guys from the 4th world with enough money to travel the globe. I think most of them go straight to Suk 2-11 to pursue their business.

The dividing line between Europe and Asia in Russia is the Ural Mountains. Turkey also straddles both continents.

You must understand that Americans are trained from early childhood to be xenophobic. We are not as courageous as Hollywood makes us out. That's how the Military Industrial Complex is able to get us involved in war after war, creating terrorizing agencies for us to tremble over in third world countries far from our own. However, many Americans do get to spend time in foreign countries, usually under the protection of the twenty or thirty thousand other Americans accompanying them in similar military uniforms. These Americans spend their tours living a life of luxury and privilege while criticizing the host country for its backwardness and then returning to the U.S. and starting life over without the girlfriend and baby he has left behind.

A mere 4% drop in visits by Americans tourists in Thailand ... and a supposition that it's because of travel advisories ... and you're knee-jerk fast to criticize Americans as scared? Sounds like you already had that conclusion waiting for "proof" you are correct ... aka a self-fulling prophesy.

This may be difficult for you to grasp, but it's actually part of both.

Ever look at a map? Ever see on the Thai beaches those hot, blond haired, European looking ladies from Russia?
