connecting headphones to Toshiba Power TV 29P2300VT

Hi,

I have a new Toshiba flat screen TV, bought here in Thailand. I want to be able to use headphones when watching TV at night. There is no "regular" head phonejack on this TV so I bought a wire that plugs into the right/left external speaker output from the TV and has a female connector for headphones at the other end.

The problem is the internal speakers do not turn off . . . . . which defeats the purpose of headphones. In addition, the headphones work, but at one steady rather quiet volume. The volume of the headphones won't go up or down, no matter how loud the volume control is adjusted to.

Anyone know how to disable the internal speakers and enable the external ones? I kind of thought the tv would do this automatically, but it doesn't.

Thanks for any ideas!

You can stop the regular speakers by turning down the volume control (it won't affect the Aux output which is intended to drive your sound system).

Then, since you need more volume you will need a headphone amplifier, something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SMSL-sApVI-HiFi-Portable-Headphone-Earphone-Amplifier-AMP-Black-/221396094847?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_HomeAudioHiFi_Amplifiers&hash=item338c3c4f7f

You should also be able to use a wireless headset like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-in-1-Headset-Wireless-Headphones-Cordless-RF-Mic-for-PC-TV-DVD-CD-MP3-MP4-/201150211085?pt=UK_AudioVisualElectronics_HomeAudioHiFi_Headphones&hash=item2ed57ca40d

If you look through the audio setup in your TV, you should be able to disable the tv speakers, so they are always off. You may or may not be able to set the TV volume control to change the external volume. That setting will also be in the audio setup.

If not, maybe consider running sound to an external stereo, and plug the headphones into that. OR, plug in amplified computer speakers with a headphone jack built in - that's what I do on my setup. I have old logitek satellite speakers and the speaker with the volume control and power button also has a headphone jack.

Thanks guys!

I think I get it now. I need something to amplify the signal/sound coming out of the audio outputs. I suppose a headset with built in volume control would be the easiest solution at this point.

Do they sell wireless headphones in Thailand? I had a pair in the USA but the power for the plug in charger was incompatible here.

Thanks again!

I got a new LG 55" TV several months ago and was unpleasantly surprised at no headphone jack (my fault for assuming vs. checking). It does have a jack for digital audio output, so I got a DAT converter with Toslink cable for the connection. The converter had RCA audio connectors but no problem to get a plug with proper audio jack to fit. I had a Fujiyama FiiO headphone amplifier so all is well with a minimum of cabling. Note I got the DAT converter IUS$12) and the FiiO amplifier (US$22) from Aliexpress, delivery in three weeks after my ordering. Per my usual ordering practice I got two of each; going out in the field we had a simple rule: two is one and one is none.
