PM: Cabinet’s duty in high gear after policy declaration

BANGKOK, 13 September 2014 (NNT) – Prime Minister Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha is adamant that all Cabinet ministers will quickly carry out their tasks in full force now that the government policy has been announced to Parliament.

Following the delivery of policy statement before the National Legislative Assembly, Gen Prayuth stated on his weekly TV program “Returning Happiness to the People” that all ministers could now fully take charge of their assigned responsibilities. In his position as the premier, he said he was relieved and elated to know that there was a Cabinet to help the Thai people in restoring happiness, driving the nation forward and rebuilding foreigners’ confidence.

The next crucial step, Gen Prayuth pointed out, would be the government’s continuation of the National Council for Peace and Order’s undertakings in the second phase of reform. With the ultimate goal of ensuring the Kingdom’s security and sustainability, he admitted the difficulty of the task but insisted he would give it his best attempt.

In addition, the Prime Minister touched on the anti-corruption policy, saying the government had laid down short, medium and long-term measures to prevent and eradicate corruption while integrated efforts by all sectors would be necessary. He also noted that corruption cases must be handled with care, with equality and fairness provided for all those involved.

By Digital Content

CHAI NAT, Sept 13 -- Interior Minister Gen Anupong Paochinda on Saturday inspected the water level at Chao Phraya dam in the central province of Chai Nat and held a meeting with 10 provincial governors, ordering them to closely monitor the situation and to provide assistance to flood victims.

Gen Anupong inspected the water situation for the first time after the interim government delivered a policy statement to members of the National Legislative Assembly members on Friday.

He first inspected the water level stored at Chao Phraya dam in Chai Nat’s Sapphaya district and then attended the meeting with 10 governors from Chao Phraya-Tha Chin River basin near Bangkok.

The governors were told to closely monitor flooding situation along the Chao Phraya – Tha Chin river basin and to also provide necessities to flood victims.

Speaking to journalists before the meeting began, Gen Anupong said he was informed that the volume of rainwater this year would be low and that he was worried of water shortage during the dry s ason.

On Typhoon Kalmaegi, which is expected to enter China between September 17 – 18, Gen Anupong said he is still awaiting a report from the Meteorological Department, and that concerned officials are on alert.

He assured people that this year Thailand would not suffer severe flooding as in 2011. (MCOT online news)

Exporters urged to enter deeper into Indonesian market
By Digital Content

1410593993505-640x390x1.png

BANGKOK, Sept 13 -- Thai exporters have been urged to penetrate deeper into the Indonesian market after the newly president of that country, Joko Windows, is focusing on stimulating the economy and speeding up amending trade and investment laws to facilitate foreign investors, said Ampawan Pichalai, director of the Commerce Ministry Trade Policy and Strategy Office.

Ms Ampawan said Mr Widodo’s plans to boost Indonesia’s economy as well as improving the country’s basic infrastructure and amending trade and investment law would offer an opportunity for Thai exporters to market more goods to Indonesia, a fellow member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

With a total population of about 248 million and having an abundance of oil and gas resources as well as agricultural products, Indonesia is currently developing several industries including automobile, electronics, textile and fishery.

However, Indonesia’s upstream and midstream industries are still not too strong and it is a good opportunity for Thailand to export auto spare parts after China has steadily relocated production bases to Thailand.

On the other hand, Japan wants to see Thailand as the regional hub for R&D.

Thai investors are advised by the Commerce Ministry to use Indonesia as a production base for manufacturing low-cost items which would enable them to compete in the world market. (MCOT online news)

Thailand plans to boost exports to NZ by eight per cent in 2014
By Digital Content

14105968848489-640x390x1.jpg

BANGKOK, Sept 13 -- The Commerce Ministry has planned to boost Thai exports to New Zealand by eight per cent in 2014 from last year, said Nantawan Sakuntanak, director-general of International Trade Promotion Department.

Ms Nantawan said her department would use Thailand-New Zealand Closer Economic Partnership Agreement and the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement as major tools in boosting Thai exports, and this would assist Thailand’s small- and medium-sized enterprises in cooperating with the government to boost their production and exports of agricultural products.

Also, ten exhibitions of Thai goods would be organised for 2015 and senior executives from New Zealand would be invited to visit Thailand, she said.

The department has targeted to double bilateral trade by 2020.

Bhuthong Thongyai, director of International Trade Promotion office in Sydney, said that trade between ASEAN and New Zealand during one year, from June 2013 to July 2014, increased to about 13.46 billion NZ dollars, or 13.4 per cent of New Zealand’s total trade.

Goods exported by ASEAN member countries to New Zealand accounted 16.7 per cent during the same period, said Bhuthong, adding that the majority of goods exported by the regional grouping were: petroleum products, animal feedstuff, plastic, rubber and seafood. (MCOT online news)
