Firefox only upgrades when run as administrator?

Featured Replies

Anyone know why the Firefox upgrades (updates) don't work from Help About unless one actually starts the program to begin with as an administrator (Win 7 64 bit)?

This is normal, reason being that it wants to write in Program Files and that requires Admin Privileges.

Ok thanks for that. But that leaves me wondering why Firefox always tries to install updates and gives a failed message with no clue what is wrong (which isn't normal) - been like this for over a year or more on my PC? I read somewhere fix was to go to file manager and start Firefox in admin mode - so thats what I do only when I need to do an update. Only software on my PC behaves this way.

Again yes,but you also can right click on the Firefox Icon (on your desktop) and select "Run as Admin.."

Unfortunately this is how it works at the moment and this not only on your PC, it does this on my PC also.

There are many posts on the Firefox Support forums about this.

Edit 1: Added Ps

Ps: I do a check (daily) if any of the software on my PC is outdated with a program called Sumo (Free download : http://www.kcsoftwares.com/?sumo

Yes, Sumo is great. But make sure you only download Sumo Lite. There's a choice of three, Sumo Lite is the one on the right.

I assume you mean the portable version ? If so that is the middle one as it doesnt have a installer (its just a zip file).

The 1st one has a sponsor in the installer, the middle one is the zip file and the right one is the installer.

I set up my Win7 64bit with 3 accounts, admin, my normal account, and guest.

Admin privileges unlimited by definition

My acct: set up with admin privileges but it asks me before running programs, e.g., Firefox update.

Guest acct: no previliges, can not run programs.

So I suggest you go to your control panel and check your acct authorizations and make changes if you wish to do so.

I too had problems but managed to update successfully without admin permissions.

Using the resource monitor, I noticed that when you close Firefox (32.01) it does not immediately kill the process (and associated plugin containers), they continue to show as greyed out for a while with status "Terminated".

I waited until they had gone and reapplied the update.
