Something more: in the streets, I can read almost 100% of what is written on shops, doors, road signs, advertisement etc; I mean, regarding the language, I can read what Thai people read in front of them , and for this I feel integrated in the country ( if it's everyday vocabulary, because I am not , and will never be, "fluent" )

As a falang my favorite spin on the language is being able to understand what the Thai's are saying around me when they don't know I understand them. This can be used to your advantage. And you definitely know when its in your best interest to disappear.

For you guys who can speak some Thai but struggle with the tones... Learn the writing !

The "secrets" of the pronunciation are in the written language.

Once you can read and write Thai you will be able to "picture" the right tones, and very quickly you will become fluent.

At least 30' a day... and in 1 year you will be surprised of your level.

At first it may seem difficult, but after a while it becomes enjoyable to learn and to progress.

You don't even need a teacher.

Buy the books of Benjawan Poomsan Becker (Thai for beginners and Thai for intermediate learners).

As I said, do it for your own happiness while in Thailand. To be able to speak fluent Thai makes like totally different.

And forget the grumpy guys who say that it is a waste of time

Actually I was writing about the posters on Thai Visa who still have the Bwana complex. It is a recurrent thought on Thai Visa that Thais would have been better off if they had been colonized like Burma and

Yemen.

My point was that many Thais refuse to speak English just because they like remind Farang of their limited linguistic ability.

It has nothing to do with Linguistic ability . British people on the whole can go anywhere in the world and people will speak their language. Can't say for the Thais and every other nation in the world . You sound like you don't like Brits , are you a Paddy ?

I wrote colonized like Burma and Yemen. Two examples of typical colonization. I could have said Laos and Cambodia. I tend to lump all people with a Bwana complex into one group. British people can't go anywhere in the world and be understood. But it's a symptom of the Bwana complex to think that's true and a good example of why Thai people don't like Farangs.

Whats this "Bwana complex" Not all people want to come to foreign parts and "soak up the culture" , they may just want to get a break from a hard life of work with a bit of decent weather and cheap beer , but I suppose you look down your nose at those people . Ive worked all over Asia and the people who sicken me the most are the hypocritical poor little rich kids , backpacking and looking like the havent had a shower in a month, haggling over a bowl of 20 Bhat noodles and staying in the cheapest digs with a fan and mozzi net to experience the" real Thailand". What they fail to realize even though they speak Thai is , the Thai's don't want to live like that, they want a bit of air-con and cable TV as well. So you getiing down and "At one' with the people and being anti "Bwana" may look cool with your funky pals , but the Thais think your lot are retards. See how much they want to be a "Bwana" when they have a bit of money , they treat their own poor people like shit

I would love to speak Thai but I am just plain lazy and I admit that.

I am not totally unfamiliar with the lingo, I do know basic stuff, but like I said, just Lazy....

We are all different.

I did it with these books and with no teacher.

And now I read, write and speak Thai fluently

If you really want to read and write, all you need are these books and personal efforts.

The teachers' main goal is to get your money and feed his family, not to make you read, write and speak.

I like the post of robertthebruce who just admits he is lazy to learn.

If you are lazy to learn, no problem. Up to you. But then don't start to discourage others to learn the language with all sorts of wrong reasons.

Make the effort to speak correct Thai and it changes your life in Thailand.

With regard to having Thais ignore foreigners' attempts to speak Thai, I would have to say my experience has been very much the opposite.

I tried learning French in Quebec (after six years of studying french in junior high and high school), but could almost never get anyone in Montreal to engage or have any patience with me at all. So I gave up.

When I went to rural France a few years later I found the people far more patient and supportive and was surprised that all those years of study did pay off, albeit briefly.

When I moved to Thailand over 20 years ago (after studying Thai through books and tapes) I couldn't believe how just how enthusiastic and supportive the Thais were to hear a foreigner trying to learn their language. It think it was that encouragement that was part of the reason I was able to learn it and stay here for so long.

That said, I understand that times have changed with mass tourism and I suspect the 'Quebec reaction' (as I like to call it) might be more common here now, especially for beginners.

As for the 'education visa' route, I haven't met any foreigners who achieved real fluency who took that path. I am sure they exist, but everyone I have met who had that visa were just using it as a means to stay in the country in order to pursue other interests.
