Thailand poised to launch ASEAN-NARCO Center to fight regional drug problem

BANGKOK, 15 September 2014 (NNT) – Thailand has held talks with other ASEAN member countries concerning the joint effort to eradicate narcotic drugs from the region through the establishment of the ASEAN Narcotic Cooperation (ASEAN-NARCO) Center.

Justice Minister Gen Paiboon Khumchaya chaired a conference with heads of drug-related agencies from all ten ASEAN countries as well as three dialogue partners, namely China, Japan and South Korea. The aim of the meeting was to seek measures to cope with a more severe narcotic problem that could come with the enhanced transport connectivity following the ASEAN Community formation.

One of the issues discussed was the official opening of ASEAN-NARCO Center in 2015 in line with the policy to raise the efficiency of anti-drug operations throughout the region. Once operational, the ASEAN-NARCO Center will act as the central policy maker and will strive to solve the local narcotic problem at its root cause while preventing the spread of narcotics from other regions.

With Thailand designated as the coordinator and leader of investigation, bilateral meetings with each ASEAN nation will be arranged periodically. Special attention will be paid to Myanmar, which is known as a major production hub for narcotic substances.

The "root cause" is the existence of laws against the production, distribution, consumption and possession of drugs. Will the ASEAN-NARCO Center discuss any update (or removal) of the outdated drug laws themselves? It doesn't seem so, as the focus seems to continue to strictly enforce them. Questioning drug laws poses an existential threat to all anti-drug bodies worldwide - all the funding that keeps them going may disappear and they could all end up losing their prestigious and well-paid jobs.

Who will fund the ASEAN-NARCO Center?

Yes, the drug enforcement "industry" also serves as a price support mechenism to guarantee a high profit incentive thus ensuring more product moves and on and on.... everybody profits.

This cracks me up. Thailand has rejected every offer of free assistance to train Western models of drug abuse prevention and treatment. The blind leading the visually impaired.

This is news to me. I've never heard of such a thing.

It's quite interesting. Any pointers on where to get further details on this would be appreciated. A google problem is that it's very difficult to search for a negative on the internet.

This ASEAN entity is trying to push its way into inidividual asian countries...another way for big-brother to set-up shop in Asia. You're not fooling some of us...we're right on and we'll expose you at every turn.

Tell me who the "you" that you intend to expose at every turn, ASEAN? Have you even know how it is structured and how what you said, seems rather contrary to their mandates and behaviour thus far?

From what I can tell it is making attempts to mobilize the workforces and permit trade, if there are other moves that are somewhat otherwise natured please let us all know.

You really need to get better at the exposing bit, otherwise you're just wasting electrons.
