A Vietnamese kidnap victim shows his maimed right hand at a press conference yesterday. While living in Thailand, he says his alleged Vietnamese captors tortured him, including slicing off the finger.

BANGKOK: -- Finger of Vietnamese victim severed to demand Bt1.5m from his family

Three Vietnamese men are in police detention for allegedly kidnapping and chopping off their victim's finger in an unsuccessful attempt to extort Bt1.5 million from his family.

The victim, who is also Vietnamese, had reportedly been tortured throughout the ordeal.

The suspects were arrested after they jumped into the sea from a Pattaya pier in a bid to escape police late Friday night. Police used boats to capture them.

In detention are Long, 28, Nguyen Tai Hai, 27 and Niam, 28.

Police held a press conference yesterday to announce their arrests.

Acting chief of Provincial Police Region 1 Maj-General Srivara Ransibrahmanakul said arrest warrants had been issued for the three suspects. The alleged offences were committed earlier this month.

"We will also go after their two Vietnamese accomplices who are still on the run," he said.

The alleged accomplices have been identified as Thong Sin, also known as Sornram, 30, and Nguyen Tien Lap, 25.

Police alleged the five suspects kidnapped Ball, a fish vendor, from the ground floor of his condo building in Nonthaburi on September 12.

Police said Ball's family could provide only a part of the Bt1.5-million ransom demand, prompting the kidnappers to cut off Ball's little finger on the right hand. They sent the severed finger to Ball's wife, who then lodged a complaint with the police.

Police quickly tracked the kidnappers to a deserted house in Pathum Thani. Ball was found chained in a bathroom with wounds all over his body. The kidnappers were not there.

"But we quickly investigated further," Srivara said.

Police then learned that at least three of the kidnappers were in Chon Buri and arrested them.

"Some of the five suspects also kidnapped an eight-year-old Vietnamese boy from Ayutthaya for a Bt80,000 ransom in May," Srivara alleged.

Speaking at the press conference, Ball said he did not know any of his alleged attackers previously.

The three suspects in police detention allegedly said they had targeted Ball based on a plan devised by Thong Sin, who promised to pay them Bt10,000 each, and Nguyen Tien Lap cut off the finger.

The trio has been charged with kidnapping an adult, causing serious harm to their victim, and illegally detaining others.

Well done on catching these vile people.

Kidnapping children too. Nasty pieces of work from what is said above.

Now give them real hard labour if and when convicted. Maybe cut a finger off them too, slowly and with a blunt saw.

He was kidnapped 9 days ago. Some time passed and the family didn't pay enough, so then his finger was cut off, presumably not surgically, and by yesterday the stump had healed.

I want some of whatever Vietnamese medicine they used! Could make a fortune!

I hope the authorities impose a sentence of at least 30 years in a hard prison, where he will be assured of being someone's girlfriend the whole time. He deserves that. A guy like this has no right to breathe oxygen. An act such as this one essentially revokes that right. Lock him up. Or feed him to the tigers or alligators. That way the system is not responsible for him.

That is quite a business model - kidnapping people that look like they don't have two pennies to rub together and then asking THB 1.5 million in ransom. They should get extra time for for stupidity.

Some people are not human beings. Some people do not deserve to even be called animals. Some people are worse than any nightmarish villain in fiction, simply because they are real. Some people are not members of the human race.

Some people are not people.

These men are not men. They are mad carnivores and should be unceremoniously put to sleep.

Kidnap gang 'cut off victim's finger to extort family'

PATTAYA: Three Vietnamese kidnapping suspects who allegedly cut off their victim's little finger and sent it to his family have been arrested in Pattaya.

The suspects — identified by police as Long, 28, Nghian Tai Hai, 27 and Niam, 28 — tried to escape by jumping into the sea when they were confronted by officers just before dawn yesterday (September 20) at a ferry pier near South Pattaya's Walking Street.

Their attempt to flee failed. The officers, who pursued the suspects in a boat, arrested them "easily", Pol Maj Gen Siwara Rangsiphrammanakun, acting chief of Provincial Police Region 1, said.

Arrest warrants were issued for the three men after police found the wounded victim, who is also a Vietnamese national, in an abandoned house in Pathum Thani's Thanyaburi district several days after his abduction.

The victim, identified as Tai Hua Hai, was kidnapped on September 12 as he was riding a bicycle from his condominium in Nonthaburi's Bang Yai district.

The 34-year-old, who sells fish at Bang Yai City market, was travelling to work late in the evening when his abductors approached him.

Mr Tai said the men wrapped tape around his eyes before bundling him into a taxi and driving him to a house.

The abductors stole nearly B100, 000 in cash from the victim's bag, then forced him to phone his family to ask for a ransom of B1.5 million, he said.

Pol Maj Gen Siwara said the victim's relatives asked if they could pay an initial amount of B100, 000, but this angered the gangsters.

"They cut off his little finger, sent it to his family and threatened to sever the victim's arm if their demand was not met," he said.

Pol Maj Gen Siwara said the family decided to call police and investigators were soon able to track down the gangsters' whereabouts.

The suspects had fled before the police raid, leaving the victim chained to a toilet. He had suffered injuries to his body in addition to his hand, police said.

Investigators are looking for another two Vietnamese suspects. Mr Niam is accused of committing a similar crime in Ayutthaya's Bang Pa-in district.

The officers charged the suspects with kidnap, and injuring and robbing a person.

Another similar abduction occurred in Bangkok's Sai Mai district in 2012, when a Vietnamese man was kidnapped by a Vietnamese gang who threatened to cut off his finger or kill him if his family did not pay a ransom. Police later saved the man and arrested all the gang members, who admitted to involvement in two abduction cases targeting Vietnamese nationals.

And more surprisingly, many people believe that all these men are the creation of a good God...

Investigation eh? That's a novel idea.

Looks like the police did an excellent job of tracking the culprits down and arresting them. So no need for you to be so smug.
