thailiketoo
True visions PVR recording is now free for Gold and Platinum packages. I called up and had it turned on last night. Now where do I find a cheap SATA portable hard drive?

thailiketoo
Tesco, Big C and many others, to say nothing of almost any computer shop. I checked. No they don't. I am looking for a portable ESATA drive. The ESATA drive to record needs a power connection and a ESATA connection. Below is one way of doing it. But there must be an easier way. Langsuan Man
I don't know how True's PVR works but in the US the cable and sat providers lock them down so an external drive can't be used But if you are sure it will work InvadeIT has them, see: http://www.invadeit.co.th/search/external-hard-drive/

pattjock
You can call true vision (026886688) and order a drive. 500Gb eSATA external drive, 84hrs of HD recording or 340hrs of standard definition, cost BHT3990 Can probably also buy at any computer shop. They are hard drive enclosures or hard drives with USB3 not ESATA. There is no esata portable hard drives at http://www.invadeit....nal-hard-drive/ Like, Orico 1-Bay 3.5" Hard Drive Enclosure USB 2.0 eSATA Black (3519SUS) . I think that is just an enclosure. Or LaCie Rugged 2TB External Desktop Hard Drive USB 3.0 Thunderbolt is USB3 not esata? Edited September 25, 2014 by thailiketoo
MJCM
@ThailikeToo, I was just replying to what you said, that the link Langsuan Man posted were only cases. What he posted were Cases with External Drives, sorry for the confusion. Edit 1: If you wanna know if they have them (or can get them) just email them from here http://www.invadeit.co.th/contact-us/ Edited September 25, 2014 by MJCM
Langsuan Man
You need to learn the definition of eSATA, and then just buy an enclosure and put a hard drive into it. You are making it more difficult than it is or just buy an upgrade from True as pattjock suggested eSATAShort for External Serial Advanced Technology Attachment eSATA is an extension to the Serial ATA standard that enables SATA drives to be attached externally. Prior to eSATA, external hard drives were connected via USB 2.0 or FireWire. While eSATA can provide fastertransfer ratesthan USB or FireWire, it requires its own power connector

Yes I know I can buy a hard drive and a hard drive enclosure and the cables to connect. My question was is there a portable esata hard drive. Like the one below. Mrjlh
Buy a Orico 2598SUS3 @ 1290B direct from Orico.comBuy a “Hitachi Travelstar”, Model HTS541010A9E680 /0J224131 TB (NB-SATA-III) HGST (8MB) buy from Lazada.com @2090B This is the package I put together for the staff at a local Truevisions store. I even gave them pdf file for notifying customers. I'll post it if you want. It's almost the exact same setup they sell except they use a WD drive and its cheaper. Very easy to assemble. Thank you very much. How would I order it from Lazada? What is the name of the hard drive? What is the name of the enclosure (or is it a docking station?) what is the name of the cables? I google Hitachi travelstar lazada and I get, http://www.lazada.co.th/hitachi/?wt_sn=6408372008_23467271288&wt_snk=Broad_6408372008_%2Blazada+%2Bhitachi&gclid=CKaH8NHD_cACFQiTjgodKXkANQ Which is, Hitachi Internal HDD for PC Ultrastar A7K1000 3.5 Inch SATA II / 1TBIs the ultrastar the same as the travelstar? Does it go in some kind of enclosure? I search Lazada for esata cable and get http://www.lazada.co.th/catalog/?q=ESATA+CABLE
Mrjlh
Read the pdf again, all the info you need is in the pdf file. go to http://www.lazada.co.th/ and search for the part number HTS541010A9E680 /0J224131. It'll pop up. If you find a slightly different model (their inventory changes), read the "specs" on it very carefully and compare them. The minimum specs were stated in the pdf. You can also do a Google search for any USB 3, eSata, 6GB/S HDD. But the prices vary all over the place. Lowest price I found was with Lazada. Takes 5-7 days to get delivered. C.O.D. Go to Orico website and do the same thing. If you get a drive with USB 3 you need the SUS3 enclosure. It comes with the cables. Quick delivery from them and very reliable. Also the 2598SUS3 is backward compatible which means it will work with a HDD that has USB2 connectors. So you only need to buy it. The USB 2 enclosure is a couple of hundred baht cheaper. chris2004
I bought my Orico case and a 1 TB hard drive separately much cheaper than Truevisions charge. Most big computer shops have then JIB etc.

Most big computer shops have then JIB etc. Is this the case you bought from Orico? It shows a 3USB connection. Will that work with no power connection? Or is the 3USB both data and power connection. The other option I see from Orico is the docking station with a data connection and I'm assuming a power connection photo #2. The advantage to the docking station would be it uses a 2.5 or 3.5 hard drive.
pattjock
If you want to record what you are watching live and pause it while you go for another beer there is an easier way. Plug in an USB memory stick in the USB socket in the back of the TrueVision box, answer yes to format. You can now press the pause button to stop the live program and resume when you are ready to watch again. No need to call TreVison to start this service. I've just posted a question about this to the forum as despite searching I couldn't turn up this post again. Essentially though my questions is about USB 2 or 3 when it comes down to HDDs. How do you know if it's a USB 3? Is is because of the 6GB speed because none of the drive specs I see mention anything about USB 2 or 3 anywhere?? This is the question I just posted: Just got my TrueVisions installed with a PVR capable box. I plan to buy what I need to make it PVR ready and plan to but the drive and enclosure from Invade IT for around 2,500 baht instead of paying True 4,780 for the same thing. One thing I'm a bit confused over though, reading back through other posts plus other info I can dig up, is where USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 comes into it? AFAIK the data transfer between the STB and HDD takes place over E-Sata via the E-Sata cable that connects the two devices. The only purpose of the USB connection to the STB from the drive enclosure seems to be to power it. The articles I have read suggest I can use an Orico 2598US or 2598US3 depending on whether the HDD is USB 3 or USB 2. Looking at the Orico site it says that both enclosures are compatible with True TV PVR. But where does USB 2 / 3 come into it? None of the drives I'm looking at (WD Sapphire Blue 1TB mainly) mention anything about being USB 2 or 3 anywhere in their specs. So I can't figure how 'depending on what drive you have' (for choosing the USB 2 or 3 enclosure) comes into it???? Maybe I'm missing something here but I don't get the involvement of USB 2/3 in this. Unless it's a fitting on the HDD and the way it connects to the HDD enclosure because power seems to be the only thing the USB is used for. SooKee
Just by way of an update to this. The Enclosure that was referred to above (Orico 2598SUS3) is hard to find at computer shops now, at least here in Phuket and it is also out of stock at Orico. As such I decided to opt for this enclosure which is eSATA and USB 3 and will take 3.5" drives. Oddly, InvadeIT are out of stock of a lot of drives also but I ended up going with a WD 1TB Caviar Green. http://www.oricothailand.com/2011/index.php?module=main&pages=Product%20info&tp=1&product=
