I doubt there is an Ebola strain in the whole of Thailand. They must have used some other haemorrhaghic fever virus. Nevertheless, I am giving the benefit of the doubt. No-one knows - I mean that the doctors don't know if the nurse would've have survived, anyway. They particularly made the point that there was no real evidence to suggest to link his recovery to the drug - as has been pointed out here, trials are usually a very long winded affair in the West. They are trialling drugs in the UK to see if there are any negative affects on people (as opposed to animals) - one has to assume that the medical world think they have is a possible cure and it would seem they are speeding up the trial system. Does that suggest they are more worried then they are willing to publically admit about the Ebola outbreak (rhetorical question, by the way!)? Do not worry...the headline is definitely misleading compared to what the smart arsed buffoons are expected to say on Thursday. They are most probably hiring a PR firm to draft their speeches now that they realised that they made a mistake ....though the news in Thai got positive response as it made thais even more nationalistic and xenophobic as every Somchai and Ying in the street is marvelling at how great Thailand is ! Could someone knowledgeable please explain whether there is a difference between a 'vaccine' and a 'cure'? A vaccine prevents disease. An example is the childhood vaccines you likely got growing up: mumps, poliomyelitis, measles, pertussis etc. Once you get the vaccine you can hung out with other kids that have mumps and you won't get it. There are vaccines only for a handful of diseases. A cure is a drug or a combination of drugs administered once you have the disease. Often times the drugs provide relief from the symptoms of the disease. For instance, anti fever medication does not cure the flu but it does drop the fever for a while. Garlic, tumeric, ginger, papaya leaf do not have "FDA aproval as medicine. For those infected, a multi year billion dollar aproved dosage testing regime is not relevant. You are correct in one way,Africa is way out of our experience sphere, it doesn't really matter to most of us if we are honest ( PC's aside) but you are wrong about it being to late if it occurs in the US or Europe, it would be quickly contained and logic would prevail, no mumbo jumbo, no witch doctors.
