Internet live-streaming in Chiang Mai

Are you an Internet streamer?

Using a Slingbox on a TV in the USA, I can stream my favorite TV programs to my computer in Chiang Mai. The stream rate (or “bitrate”), measured in kilobytes per second, needs to be at least 800 Kbps to achieve a real nice picture.

I’m in Hang Dong and subscribe to 3BB fiber optic, 30/3.

During the day, the bitrate stream is smooth and steady in a range of 800 to 1200 Kbps. Then, along about 6:45pm every evening (weekday or weekend), the video stream stutters and freezes (“hangs”) to the point where I just turn it off. 400 to 600 Kbps.

Is my ISP controlling or throttling the stream speeds? Are there too many users jumping on the (shared) fiber optic line every evening here in Hang Dong? Is it both? Do I need a better router? A booster? A better 3BB plan?

Any Chiang Mai streamers having similar problems?

In the evenings, holidays, weekends there are more people sucking

bandwidth from what the service providers give us,

I stream from Bangkok servers, all of the channels i need to watch,

sports,news,movies,series,documentaries,kids channels,its a paid

service, but only 350THB pm. I only have 15/1 and it works very well

for me.

Some people will say, that the decline in bandwidth does not happen

at these busy times, but common sense dictates the more people

using a finite resource, everyone will receive less ,its like 10 people

sucking with straws from a glass at normal times, when its busy theres

a 100 suckers (pun),trying to get the last drop.

regards Worgeordie

P.S. I have a little app called Networx on my desktop it tells you

what speed you have coming through just by placing cursor over it

its free,

I use ThaiExpatTV. Gives me a heap of UK channels which includes the BBC world service, plus 1 Aussie, 1 NHK.

Costs 1,700baht per quarter year. Programs run without pause at all times.

I use 3BB 10Mb.

www.ilikehd.com It's True online, 350 thb for 30 days, 306 chanels; no contract.....you can take a week off between 30s if you want to. It's "bits," when using a lower case b, as in Kbps. I attribute the occasional hiccups to the crazy kids after school, and the rainy season storms. Big storm yesterday moving pretty rapidly, and I had a few hiccups last night. I use economy 3BB, which I'm pretty happy with.
