BANGKOK - Thailand's flag carrier airline has announced that it will close down its Hong Kong office for the next week, citing the escalating political unrest that has paralysed the city's financial district since Monday morning.

According to the deputy director of Thai Airways Ltd, Surapol Issarangkul na Ayudhya, the airlines' bureau in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region will close down from 30 September to 5 October.

Mr. Surapol said the Thai Airways office in Hong Kong’s Admiralty district is too close to the ongoing pro-democracy protests, which escalated significantly over the weekend.

"We have to close it down out of security concerns for customers and staff," Mr. Surapol said, adding that Thai Airways flights between Bangkok and Hong Kong will continue normally.

Once i learnt about Thai airways allowing staff to protest in Bangkok when the streets were choked up.

I felt puzzled with this decision .

I used to fly with them but on democracy grounds chose not to any more.

Maybe their thoughts are they could be regarded as Anti - democracy ? (By protesters)

As their demonstration is pro democracy rather than pro NCPO .

Anyhow I hope the protesters are successful in keeping their freedoms.

And Thai Airways make reforms on their political views in Asia

They are fearful of CCP's track record in Tiananmen Square, and a repetition of history. Nothing to do with politics.

Such a refreshing sight to behold in the photo: pro-democracy protesters who want the right to a government by representative democracy instead of demonstrators who seek a government nominated by an unelected minority oligarchy. What lessons of democracy will The Nation and the Junta will learn from such an event? One might think it is that free and open demoractic elections coupled with the rights to run for office, freedom of expression, alternative sources of information, and freedom of association are the prerequisites for establishing democratic institutions.

On the other hand the Junta seems to hold that only an educated middle class electorate is capable of sustaining democratic institutions. Looking at the Hong Kong crisis it may want to consider the idea of holding back the uneducated lower class! The Asian countries of South Korea (No. 1), Japan (No. 2), Singapore (No. 3) and Hong Kong (No. 4) rank the highest in terms of global education while Asian countries of Indonesia (No. 40) and Thailand (35) were among the lowest educational performers of 39 countries. Guess what peoples demand more for a democratic society - the educated middle class!

Will you chose to leave Thailand on the same democracy grounds?

Have already - better things to do than be dictated to by guys in uniforms- though i understand your type might find it exciting or something else .?

I will return but maybe only when the place returns to democracy
