how much do you consider as value for food?

Featured Replies

i have to admit that i don't like Thai food at all.

though i be restricted to my western diet.in average i spent about 200-300 thb for my food sometimes more sometimes less. actualy i love from time to time a good steak but too stingy to pay about 1000thb for a decent piece.in the old days i loved cheese and wine but nowadays I don't see it as value for the daily use.i also love good cold cuts and certainly bread but i end up about 500-600 thb per day.luckily a few month ago a lovely Thai lady opened a western eatery in our soy with all my favorite dishes priced between 70-120 thb- that i call great value for money.

what about you,how much are you willing to spent for food on a daily base(not special occasions)?

Not on a daily budget myself, but in a month guess I get through THB 20k-30k, not including any booze

In all honesty, if there is something I fancy to eat, I just buy it, not worried about the cost per se

200-300 is ok(god am i stingy but than i have more for beer) but on a off day i can eat myself without a problem through 1000thb- afterwards i regret it.

Price for me does not come into it, if it's what I like or want, that's fine by me..

I am more interested in the Health aspects of what I am eating, but that's me....

Normally 1 restaurant for 100-150 baht per person and 3 regular meals at 50-100 baht each. So that's maybe 400 baht per day, 12,000 per month. Possibly less.

I'm trying to put on weight, so eat quite a lot, and consider value when purchasing - e.g. ignore cheese, get milk in bulk from FarmMart, buy whole chickens and large loaves of bread from Tesco Lotus, and specials from Tesco Lotus when they have something interesting.

unfortunately i am not on the healthy side in matter of food.i like butter, bacon, other pork products, cheese, carbohydrates and other unhealthy stuff.

OP, I think 200 to 300 Baht for food, where I live in Isaan can buy you a very descent meal.

Of course there is always the opportunity and the places to spend more.

But, as you said, I would regret it also.

Goes in from one end comes out from the other.

The little bits and pieces is what cost for me more.

I love my cheese and all kinds of cold meat that can cost a lot sometimes.

Also love my big prawns that they are about 450Baht in Tesco.

I don't really economise with food but on the other hand I don't spend silly money for eating.

I eat all types, sometime cheap thai food which I like and sometimes a nice 800 Baht pork chop, sometimes a 300 baht pork chop.

I just eat what ever I feel like.

100-3000 baht. Excluding booze

1000 Baht a day I suppose.....never really crosses my mind....some days 200 others 3000......

Rimping deli counter have a good selection of cold meats.

Usually about 70bht/100gm (6 or 8 slices).

Bread is easy to make and costs almost nothing.

I make bread rolls most days, about 1bht each.

Luckily, my taste buds operate at about the same level as my brain - marginally above flatlining. I don't need exotic foods, so a basic diet supplemented by a bit of veg from my small garden means I spend on average 150 baht a day. Don't drink, so no booze bill. So 6k a month covers most of my gastronomic sins.

Are we talking mollecular degaustation here or surf n turf/som tum??

Love fresh bread.

Go on, what's your recipe...?

I cook at home, average weekly spend is 7k for dinner, lunch is farang food at a joint near work, daily spend is 300b.

I don't eat Thai.

Ok.

From a 2 week millionaires pov....food's deliciously cheap in Thailand.

I suppose a family on a holiday doesn't count towards this thread, but if it makes any difference, it costs me 10,000baht a week in Australia to keep my wife, daughter and myself well fed.

In Bangkok, perhaps 10k a week on food (only eating out), in the village perhaps 15k a month (only cooking at home).

Difficult question to answer.

Sometimes I go to terminal 21 and eat at the food court. I think that is good value for money. Delicious and cheap.

I usually eat for 30 - 50 baht each meal but Fridays go out and eat for 700 to 1500 Baht.

The other day I ate at the Dusit Thani for 800 baht and thought it a complete waste of money.

That sounds about the number krisb....but JD is getting a bit pricey.

Where is JT?

I want the definitive spend.

When not eating out at farang restaurants I consider it hard to spend more than 100 Baht a meal.

Breakfast ; If muesli about 160 Baht/kilo, which gives you at least 5 portions

If bread 400 gram whole meat sliced bread from Big C extra 30 Baht, from which you can eat two days, and it will be difficult to add 85 Baht a time in toppings to that.

For lunch or dinner "Skinless chicken breast 110Bht/kg - frozen mixed vegatables, frozen brussels sprouts, frozen spinach all below 100Bht/kg from Makro. Brown rice cooked 5 Bht per portion, potatos maybe 20 Baht per portion.French fries 135 Bht/ 2 kg.

Eating out Thai food in clean, not farang managed restaurant, hard time to get over 100 Bht a meal.

So 300 baht a day or less, and no hunger.

1200bt per week i cook & eat large lunch, leftovers for dinner. I shop at local market & only eat veg, meat, fish, eggs, fruit & nuts, drink only water. Once a week i treat myself to a 40bht loaf of bread & occasional bowl of rice. Doing this for 18 months now never been healthier

Ive no idea what I spend although Im just back from Renaissance Marriot Hotel near chitlom BTS and 6k lighter..............burrrrrrrrrp!!

Some People pay more for a meal in Thailand then most average Thais get paid in a day or two.

Cost doesn't come into it.

Eat what I like but always keep an eye on the health factor.

I don't think I've ever eaten at a food hall - I'll give it a shot this week

I don't get how you can spend 3000 or even 1000 a day for food. I mean, where are you guys eating? At The Oriental?

I usually spend not more than 100 Baht a day for food. A main dish which is around 40-60 Baht, some water and some snacks. Breakfast I eat at home.

I eat everywhere and also at home. No idea how much i spend on it but i care for quantity and quality. If i pay more then 300 a person then at least i want to have enough food and for 500 or more it also has to be high quality.

Even for 1000 baht i wouldn't know where i can go to eat a decent steak in Bangkok. I mean a place where the steak, service, sidedishes, atmosphere are all western standard.

If we want steak we go to Zen or any other good japanese restaurant. No perfect steak there but at least edible.

Lately we like Oishi buffet ( i guess that's the name) , 500 baht for unlimited eating/drinking. I think it's a good deal for what we get. Nobody speaks english though, they won't even look at me.

When in Thailand about 2K per week but I do the cooking. Chicken, sausages, bacon, eggs, bolognaise, potatoes, home made burgers, fish. Most food acquired at Macro. The veggies all come from the market every other day.

When out and about eating meal seems to average 300 Baht or so. Gammon steaks especially.

I do love sticky rice though especially with sweet chilli sauce with crispy fried chicken or pork.

Food courts too at 50 - 60 Baht when I am out at Tesco / BigC or similar.

Thai style BBQ all you can eat are great at times too. 80 - 100 Baht

Value is easy to find, unfortunately quality is more elusive!
