Ebola scare: Woman in Cairns hospital

Cameron Atfield October 09, 2014

Queensland Health has confirmed a 57-year-old woman is being assessed in Cairns Hospital for the deadly Ebola virus, after she volunteered with Red Cross to help combat the outbreak in west Africa.

Chief Health Officer Jeanette Young said the woman, Cairns nurse Sue Ellen Kovack, recently returned from a month in Sierra Leone, where she has been working in a hospital treating Ebola victims.

Dr Young said Ms Kovack had been in home quarantine since she returned home to Cairns, in far north Queensland. on Tuesday.

Terrible news.

Moved to world news.

Hope she recovers ...it seems global travel is the worst enemy here just as in the recent SARS incident

I'm at Sydney in a day ..too close for comfort really

Can guarantee that Cairns Base Hospital will be struggling with to cope with Ebola. Terrifying if ebola gets loose in Bangkok just because of the huge population it would so hard tracing and containing people.

Let's hope they get this disease under control soon.

I've searched, but as per world death till. Has a potential global death toll been predicted. Reminds me of the Film 28 days Later

A bit off topic but . . .

Desperate. To cash in.

Direct link removed.

I remember when the black death disease was in India, the day after i flew out all airports were closed.

Why are they still flying to the ebola infected countries?

The silly cow knew the dangers and incubation period.

She should have spent 21 days in or around Sierra Leone after finishing her duties prior to jumping on a plane and exposing numerous people to the hazard.

She has been cleared of Eloba. Fair amount of critism on how this case was managed and the womans actions.

That certainly is good news. Do you have a link for that at all? Perhaps this will serve as a wake up call to Aussies, let's hope so anyway. But then again 11 posts.... doesn't seem anyone cares much..

Government has so far donated AUD 16 million for managing the outbreak in Africa, but has advised Oz medically trained citizens not to travel to affected areas to assist as no means to evacuate them, if they in turn they get infected.

Julie Bishop won't send in any physical help as she doesn't have a back up plan if someone contracts the disease? She was lead barrister helping to fight the suffers of asbestos in Australia. The fact that Oz doen't have plans to control an outbreak of such a disease is worrying.

The nurse in Qld appears to be out of danger.

Red Cross Australia are sending people to help (God Bless them). They go knowing that precatuions are in place to protect them.

A great post by Oz above.

The silly cow knew the dangers and incubation period....

Feeling a tad misogynistic today are we?

I do hope that the Aboriginals will be given protection from an invasive disease.
