KhunBENQ
Direct bus? Never heard of and very unlikely. You will have to change buses in Bangkok. Comfortable and save buses from Khon Kaen are available ("NCA", Nakhon Chai Air). http://www.nca.co.th/ Total travellng time about 20 hours, rough guess ("one day", "one night"). Khon Kaen - Bangkok about 6:30 h. Changing bus terminal in Bangkok ??? Bangkok - Phuket about 11:30h. Maybe it is possible to catch a bus to Phuket without changing terminals. Wait for more responses... Edited October 12, 2014 by KhunBENQ

KhunBENQ
NCA bus from Khon Kaen is THE choice. Unfortunately they also (have to) use the new bus terminal south of town. And there are buses to Phuket from Morchit (close to where the NCA terminal is). Morning flight with ThaiSmile for a total of 2700 Baht oneway (via Don Muang). depart 8:45, arrive 12:50h. tom21
better off going to udon thani and get a air asia flight, there is 1 a day. but if you want to spend 20 hours in a bus you will have to change in Bangkok.

I second that. why on earth would someone want to endure a 23-24 hrs bus ride (even if it's a VIP one with just 27 seats) when you can have the same journey in just 3-4 hrs (including the Khonkaen - Udon Bus trip). In November, AirAsia still has some fares at 1.533 THB (plus plus, of course). That would for sure be cheaper than taking two VIP Buses from KK to Bangkok and onwards to Phuket..... they used to be even cheaper, but they have terminated one of the two daily services, which means seats are more expensive now with less capacity available than before.....
kalasiner
Check with Chan Tour. I was at KK No 3 bus station recently and they were advertising a new service to Phuket, beginning I think on Nov, 28th.
gk10002000
yes there is a bus. I took one last November. I had taken a bus from Pattaya to Khon Kaen and that was fine during the day. I spent a few days in the city, went to the zoo, which was fun. The bus to Phuket was an overnighter that left Khon Kaen around 9 PM I think it was? I can't recommend it. Decent scenery once we got around Bangkok and started heading south down towards Phuket, but it is just too long a ride. I would literally take a leisurely day bus back to Pattaya, and then fly from Utapao to Phuket.
