webfact
Pattaya to be rebranded as World sport destinationBANGKOK, 14 October 2014 (NNT) – The Minister of Tourism and Sport, Ms. Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul is confident in Pattaya's potential to be developed into a ‘World Sport Destination’ due to its readiness in terms of training camps, accommodations and restaurants. The Minister said she would raise the possibility of the plan for discussion with all parties, both governmental and private sectors.Speaking about the upcoming long New Year holidays, she said the ministry had made a calendar listing all countdown celebrations across the country in order to promote these events and encourage Thai people to travel in Thailand during this new year. Moreover, the ministry is seeking to build bicycle lanes in all provinces of Thailand in line with the government's policy to promote eco-tourism and physical exercise. The bicycle lanes would be built with a budget of the Department of Physical Education; however, the best location of bicycle lanes will be discussed with local residents and provincial chambers of commerce before the construction starts. The Minister reaffirmed her ministry’s readiness to hold the 4th Asian Beach Games during 14-23 November 2014 in Phuket. There will be sportsmen from 42 countries attending the Games where they will compete for 169 gold medals in 26 types of sports in total. Thailand has set its goal to earn 55 golds.-- NNT 2014-10-

Baerboxer
I know of several large academic conferences held in Pattaya. It seemed to be trying to establish itself as a conference venue. The conferences I know were very successful, but some of the delegates got a bit of a shock wondering around after dinner!
