Is My Multiple-Entry Non-Immigrant B Visa Cancelled/Invalid If I Quit My Job/Have No Work Permit?

Featured Replies

At the end of this past school term (beginning of October), I ended up leaving the foundation and school I was working for due to various reasons. The foundation - an organization to place volunteer teachers in different schools - I was working for is canceling my work permit and was asking when I was leaving the country, suggesting that my visa, too, will be invalid/cancelled. I told them in November when my visa needs to be extended...of which there was no qualms about and the questioning was dropped. Although, I want to stay in Thailand longer...

I received a non-immigrant B multiple-entry visa in the beginning of August of this year (2014) from a consulate in America. Although this visa was acquired with the help of a copy of the contract with the foundation, will my visa be cancelled/become invalid if I leave the country and come back (i.e. a visa run) in early November because I do not have a job or work permit with them any longer? Another bit of information is I did not have the foundation extend the visa at all through any immigration office in Thailand because I have been here less than 90 days...if that changes things (which I think it does...).

I know I have read some forums suggesting that the visa will be fine, and others say it will be cancelled. I guess I would like some assurance that it either will or won't be when the time comes to do a visa run.

If canceled and I try to get through with the canceled visa/get denied entry, can I just opt to get a tourist visa right then at the border?

Last question: Which location would probably be the best place to conduct the visa run?

Thanks so much!

Your Visa is still valid and can be used until it expires August next year.

Remember to do a border run every 90 days.

That depends by your location, that you didn't say.

Note in some few cases when they want to make it difficult, immigration can ask for your work permit when re-entering.

Are you sure about this? It was my understanding that the non-B is becomes invalid the day the work permit is cancelled, as it is based upon the premise that one is working at the institution. As far as I know, if a new form of visa is not obtained before the work permit is cancelled, then one becomes on overstay from the very next day.

Extensions of stay become invalid, visa entries not.

Exactly like other members say. I entered the country first time beginning of July at Swampy, made a trip to Cambodia for a week end of September, re enter from don Mueang, no question asked. Same situation as yours.

Your visa I valid until the day it states in the passport...in fact you can do your final border run the day before it expires and have another 90 days. The visa doesn't state when it ends but the you have to enter before entering certain date. I did that before one time before I had my WP and they didn't even blink to give me my 90 days. But they said I have to renew my visa next time, If I'm gonna stay in Thailand.

Years ago I quit my job and the WP became invalid on the spot. Several weeks later I went to Immigration for my check in and they said my Visa was also cancelled the day I quit my job and there fore I was an Overstay. The IO said I was liable to a 20K fine or....I could get the hell out of the country and get a new visa. I left for Penang that night and came back in a couple of days later with a retirement visa. Other people may have had different experiences. Ever considered asking the Immigration people?

I just wonder how you obtained a new visa whilst you still had a valid one. Usually you cannot have two valid visa for the same country. When I applied for a visa too early I was asked to get the old visa cancelled or to wait for the current visa expired. Just wondering.

You did not have a Visa.

The op does.

He does not have 2 visas. He has a multiple entry B visa and a extension of stay of an entry from it he applied for at immigration.

His visa will remain valid but his extension will end on the date he stops working.

Just the usual confusion that is a result of calling an extension of stay a visa which is not.

I will either be in Koh Chang or Bangkok. With Koh Chang I was thinking about going to Cambodia, but I have heard some interesting things about the border control (i.e. it being more sketchy than some other locations). If I were in Bangkok, what would be some good places for a day trip?

Mostly I'm just looking for which border control isn't going to ask for my work permit and also the cheapest option.

Thanks for the help!

Baht for bath the cheapest way is train to Cambodia. Otherwise a mini bus, there are forum sponsors on this page.

For saving bring $30 is USD currency to pay Cambodia visa or even better get an e-visa to save a passport page and avoid haggling.

From Koh Chang you would use the crossing at Hat Lek. It is less busy than some of the others so there probably would be less chance of you being bothered for a work permit.

From Bangkok their a few more choices for Cambodia. You might want to contact the sponsor of this forum that has an advert on the right side of this page.

The only sure way is fly out and back.
