they horde in huge numbers at least on the ground outside
they are a dark brownish red medium sized

kind of ugly
you DONT want to get bitten or pinched by one, OUCH!
they are NOT ants, possibly related to termites?

Are you sure it isn't the rice beetle...hard to tell without a pic but they cause bad skin reaction if they get squashed on your body. Also known as a Rove Beetle
