A guy I used to know met this girl that told him she'd never been married, so after a coupl of years of living together, they decided to get married. It was at the district office that he found out that the wife was already married. In her case, she was woman enough to admit that she got married at the age of 16, but thought the marriage had ended since they separated after being together for a few years.

I also know that many ladies (expecially BGs) easily switch identities by renting birth certificates from people in their villages. I used to know a girl that switched her identity three times within a year.

Those women affected should think very hard if they ever give their ids, BCs, etc to their BKK, Pattaya, Phuket, etc based friends, or relatives.

If you are Thai it is a 10 min job to change your name at the Amphur.

100% incorrect and not even close. Anyone has the "ability" to apply for a work permit in Thailand, the applicant doesn't need to be married.

As I understand the rules, you need either a Non Immigrant class b visa, or a visa based on marriage to apply for a work permit

not everyone would be eligible for the Non Immigrant visa, so the marriage visa would be an alternative.

So the official is not named and the punishment is not explained? How the hell do they ever expect to put even the smallest dent in corruption or begin to change the culture in the minds of the average Thai with regards to corruption when this individual has clearly been give a pass on this? If this happened anywhere in the West the corrupt official would be named, shamed and put behind bars for fraud on a massive scale to set an example. I know TIT, but I thought we were making steps in a new direction. Clearly not.

Women report to officials after fake marriage registration scam

KHON KAEN: -- Over 100 Thai women have reported to officials in Nong Bua Lamphu's Nong Sang district - the centre of the fake marriage-registration scam.

They include women who were really married and those whose identity was stolen, a district official, who asked not to be named, said.

The office's disciplinary probe committee was gathering information, while the Office of Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission was also probing, the official said.

A former registrar allegedly sold some 600 women's names to foreign men, who used the names for fake marriage registration for immigration purposes from 2011 to 2013. The registrar reportedly changed his name and is now an ordained monk somewhere in Khon Kaen, the official said.

It allows an extension of stay for those who have no other route but an elite card. That's useful.

So, if these fake marriages were used for immigration purposes, will they now be going after the people who used them to stay here illegally?

They're already going after everyone seeking a marriage extension. Recall the extensive checks being made that the marriages are real.

Are you really going to argue this - it states you have the ability to apply - everyone has that, so what is your point?

A WP can even be applied for on a tourist visa, then used to obtain the non-b which allows you to apply for an extension of stay. The non-o can be used to extend for marriage, using the WP verified income to qualify - while the non-b cannot be used to extend for marriage, only work.

You stated marriage gives you a work permit - absolutely not true - anyone can apply - being married relaxes some restrictions (for some) but the normal rules still apply.

Believe me I have been complaining about this for many years, and if you do some research here you will see I am hardly on my own. Or don't believe it and pay someone to tell you what you want to hear...
