Dangerous koh Samui waterfall scam

Featured Replies

Hi all, 6 months ago I was with my young 2 yr old daughter and missus doing the tourist thing driving around waterfalls went to two which were both a massive scam with no waterfall the 2nd being a dangerous flight of stairs in which looking back was up there with the stupidest thing I have done in my life as higher it went the more dangerous it was we were told some rubbish that it's just up some small steps anyway we we followed it up to a small hut with some no hoper smiling saying no waterfall up the top. I don't think tourists know what a joke these waterfalls are across the entire country. There might be 1 or 2 legit ones out of 10 but the odds are not good and I would advise all tourists to not even think about it because it will end in disaster with a child's or even an adults life if it hasn't already( I'm quite athletic and sharp on my feet and I was in quite abit of trouble)On top of this all waterfalls have someone charging a stupid amount for a westerner. On the way back down I was charging to knock him out as was absolutely furious with the danger he put my family in. Back in he's little hut he had a knife out on the table obviously knowing I would be dirty. I told the police but there in on it across the island. In another life without family I would of destroyed these scumbags on the spot and it worrys me that they can just get away with it putting innocent life's at risk in what looks like a beautiful tourist attraction on road signs etc.Has anyone else had a similiar story about these waterfalls? I think it's important family's travelling know about all about the risks and again Do not risk your family at these so called waterfalls it's just not worth it.Infact in whole I would advise people with young kids to absolutely disregard Thailand as a safe holiday destination.Thailand is without a doubt an adults holiday destination with the Asian women for the guys and the shopping/beaches for girls/couples.Its that simple!

Seriously:-

Thailand's Health and Safety is woeful in all areas from the workplace to shopping malls to the roads to the home to you name it. At least with the waterfall you have the choice whether or not to trek into the jungle with a 2-year-old. No idea why you are so angry. If a drunk driver had crashed into you and sped off as happens here, I could understand. If this really makes you this angry, I really think Thailand is not for you.

Thanks I think your done here. Thailand is for a hustler like me I've run gambling games in the sois with all sorts of animals so don't go giving advice on who Thailand is good for I think I'm more worthy to dish it out.Its not for children that's my point millions of family's with young children travel to Thailand not expecting a small thing such as a waterfall to carry a significant risk. So people travelling to koh Samui should be wary and at times overlook glamourised street signs etc

You're absolutely right.

I would add to that that jungle trekking of all kinds is not for 2 year old children. What you say is absolutely correct.

.

Absolutely not again its the fact that 2 outa two waterfalls were corrupt and I'm warning others of this danger that's it.

Which ones? I've been to a few and all were free and quite nice

I get it, sorry I;m just being cutesmile.png

I am sure it would not be justified to you,

I believe your Op should had being that waterfall attractions are dangerous, and to make things worst, many times when you get to the top there isn't even a waterfall

To your defense a warning at the bottom of the climb, that at this time the waterfall is dry would have saved you and others a long climb, and some unnecessary danger.

The guy had a big old knife close to he's hand which was not there on arrival. This waterfall was never a waterfall.

Why allow the locals inbreds who inhabit these islands to rip you off in the first place ?

They should all be treated with suspicion - assume eveything they say is a lie, do research before going anywhere.

You'll know better next time. I wouldn't limit this advice to just islands either.

You are a walking target, you need to avoid the shots.

Cannot recall now there's a isolated family mart (yeah there's millions of these)in a nearby street close to the turn to go up to the waterfall On opposite side of Island from main peer I will track down the name and post tomorrow.

100 baht would of been ripping me off 20 was ok could be a thousand baht money not this issue When your got a nagging Thai wife chatting like best mates to this idiot it's quite believable that there could actually be a waterfall just up a couple flight of staires.Could not give a <deleted> about waterfalls just doing the family thing as family's across the world do with waterfalls so just be careful incoming tourists and consider this scam. It's pretty lame when they got the ticker to rip off there own blood of people. Some have no soul or humanity and this is the type of thing ruining the country's tourism and its story's like a low risk risk waterfall should not even make a person post something bagging the place out.In a 3rd world country everything is somewhat a risk and having children won't make these freaks take it any more easy. This is just 1 of a thousand reasons why people shouldn't bring there kids to Thailand if can be helped. I have 4 kids in totals all from2-5 In Thailand and it's incredible stressful just worrying about safety little things in western country's you just wouldn't ever consider. Again I as an adult love it but it's just not for children in any way shape or form. Play the percentages and go elsewhere

What happened to your own responsibility?

You could and should have stopped the climb or turned around at the first hint of danger. I'm sure the bloke didn't design the walk with risking your family or anyone else's in mind.

I can appreciate you felt ripped off if there was no water running from the waterfall, but many of these waterfalls are seasonal and if you do your research you can find literature advising of such.

Lack of rain is NOT a scam. Anyone with half a brain would be able to work out that waterfalls do not flow in the dry season. However right now would be a good time to be looking for waterfalls on Samui.

But you are making 20 bht sound like a small fortune. Stop whingeing and get a loan from the bank if you cannot afford it. w00t.gif

The Thai waterfalls and hot springs I have visited are quite mediocre when compared to the ones I have been to in the Philippines.

Over the years I have been to many waterfall all over Thailand, including Samui and other islands. I have never been scammed, nor disappointed.

Only one time, during the dry season, did I go to a waterfall and it was no more than a tiny trickle. We got a great chuckle out of it and took photos standing under the 'waterfall'.

I have never used a 'guide' nor have I ever paid any admission fee. Not sure why your experience was so bad, but one thing is for sure, I would never have proceeded if I felt the stairs were unsafe, as you did.

Seriously ? are you for real? illegal stuff you been doing and your having a go at others who do the same ? so much I could say but I wont

You need to go at the right time of the year for there to be water at some waterfalls.

I don't understand why it was not possible to see there is no water on the way up the side of the waterfall ,I have never seen a waterfall that you need to climb to the top to see the water! yes there are scams in Thailand, but I can't see this is one of them! it sounds more like a angry loss of face for expecting to see a waterfall out of season!

oh dear! another disappointed tourist rolleyes.gif .... perhaps the OP should just stay at home with his family ... certainly doing a bit of research or using some common sense... would help.

Of course the water levels will be low in the dry season, as oldsailor35 says, come now or through to March and it will be drastically different and have a good flow.... and it's going to vary with amount of rain!

One has to wonder what people find to complain about sometimes...facepalm.gif

I would assume it's Namaung 2 falls....... It's the most sign posted falls on the island and worth going to see...even when the water levels are low but there would have been more water in rainy season thumbsup.gif

This was in May... disappointing..... not entirely at least I don't think so...

DSC00983.JPG

No doubt the OP had a bad experience.

I have been with my family to many waterfalls over the years. Whilst they were not as spectacular as Niagara, we always enjoyed it. I don't recall having paid a single baht, unless it was part of a National Park.

As to safety, I suggest to use good judgement and stop whatever you do if risk is getting too high.

Perhaps you could spend some of the 6 billion baht empire on taking one (or more) of your 8 wives to Niagara Falls for the weekend.
