Fresh scrutiny has fallen on the recently renovated Reflecting Pool after reports claimed its new lining contains an epoxy resin labelled as toxic to aquatic life, prompting calls for environmental investigations. The allegations come after multiple dead ducks were reportedly found at the site following the completion of a $14 million refurbishment overseen during President Donald Trump's administration. Safety Documents Spark Concern According to MeidasTouch News, safety data sheets for a product identified as RHINO 405 describe the epoxy resin as "toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects." The material was reportedly used as part of the Reflecting Pool's multi-layer protective coating. The reports have fuelled questions over whether the product was suitable for use in a setting frequented by wildlife. However, no official investigation has publicly concluded that the lining caused the reported animal deaths. Manufacturer Rejects Direct Link Rhino Linings, the manufacturer of the product, said the issue affecting the pool was limited to "localized finish-coat separation." According to the reports, the company added that there is no public evidence establishing a connection between the coating and wildlife deaths. That response has done little to quiet critics, who argue the presence of warning labels warrants closer examination regardless of whether a direct causal link has been proven. Pressure Grows for Environmental Review The Center for Biological Diversity has called for investigations and the enforcement of federal environmental protections following the reported deaths of ducks at the pool. Campaigners argue that independent testing is needed to determine whether the renovation materials pose any risk to wildlife or water quality before the controversy escalates further. Contract Faces Fresh Scrutiny The reports have also renewed attention on the refurbishment contract itself. According to the allegations, the renovation was carried out under a $7 million no-bid contract awarded to Greenwater Services, a company led by Republican donor John J. Carafo. With environmental questions and procurement decisions now under the spotlight, pressure is growing for greater transparency over both the renovation process and the materials used in the project.
