Canada: New Toronto mayor ends Rob Ford era

New Toronto mayor ends Rob Ford era

(BBC) A moderate conservative has been elected as Toronto's new mayor, defeating the brother of the controversial incumbent, Rob Ford.

John Tory won 40% of the vote, ahead of Doug Ford, whose brother Rob admitted problems with alcohol and crack cocaine use during his four years in office.

Rob Ford announced last month that he would not seek re-election as he undergoes treatment for a rare cancer.

However, he did win election to a council seat in the Etobicoke district.

"In four more years, you're going to see another example of the Ford family never, ever, ever giving up," he said, hinting at another run for mayor.

Bummer.

Toronto without a Mayor Ford is like a Poutine without curd.crazy.gif

The man might have been an idiot, a crack head, etc.... but at least he was a counterbalance to the city council that was full of left-wing idiots. They typically like to get involved in everything - where they should be focused on the liveability of the city (i.e. parks, garbage, sewers, transit and roads) and stay out of the rest. At least they did not go with the raving left-wing idiot for the top job, and picked someone that at least has business experience -- even if he is a centrist.

They will always be known as the city with the crackhead mayor though - the reputation will survive.... that is how I remember Washington :P

That's got to be a disappointment to the local press. Rob Ford was gold from a reporting point of view.

Rob Ford, we shall miss yee!

Or the Three Stooges without Curly.

Sounds like the folks in Etobicoke are smoking whatever Rob is.

It's a shame, most politicians are useless, self-serving idiots, but at least Rob gave us some entertainment as well.

Played golf for several days last Nov. with three Canadians, had never heard about Rob Ford until that point. This rant is pretty much in harmony with their opinions of him. I wonder if he is related to Joe Biden?

Personally, I will miss Rob Ford for his comedic talents and I have yet to hear one Toronto resident suggest he was not good at bringing in a good budget.

Shall miss the fun news.

Rick Mercer pretty much nails it (which is what he pretty much always does). It's funny how I wasn't too troubled by Ford's entertainment value nor his politics. And that's saying a lot, coming from me, an old sort of lefty tired of do-nothing politics of the left in my city.
