Teen charged after attack on Japanese tourist
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Bangkok police yesterday announced the arrest of a teenager who allegedly conspired with another three teens to rob and assault a Japanese tourist on Sunday night before getting away with Bt30,000 in valuables.

The 38-year-old Japanese tourist was robbed between Soi 5 and 7 on Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra Road. Police arrested the young suspect on Monday evening at a checkpoint on Therdthai Road after they allegedly found foreign currency and the victim's personal documents on him. The teen allegedly confessed to joining others aged 15-17 to rob the tourist, so police are hunting for his accomplices.

The accused was initially charged with robbery using a weapon and vehicle.

In related news, Phuket police took an 18-year-old man, who allegedly hit an American tourist in the head with a wooden stick last Saturday, to re-enact the crime at a beach near Nong Han Park in Muang district. The suspect claimed self-defence, saying the tourist, who appeared drunk, knocked him down and was about to beat him with the stick. He said he'd gone to help the tourist whose motorcycle was stuck in sand.

I think this is just the beginning ....

Very sad Development in Thailand

With high inflation, people are getting poorer and desperate, and see robbery and crimes as a solution to survival.

Yeah, but good job by the police. 1 crime solved, another million to go! w00t.gif

and rising

The biggest contributor to the sliding reputation of Thailand is the fact that thais can commit any crime against a tourist and get away with it due to the complacency of the police. When will the penny drop ?

And so on it goes.

"The suspect claimed self-defence, saying the tourist, who appeared drunk, knocked him down and was about to beat him with the stick."

Fleeing the scene of a crime kinda rules out the self defence argument in most cases imo.

best place in the world to live

and DIE

When it is de rigeur to own the latest iDevice regardless of actual income, a rise in opportunistic crime is to be expected. It's not rocket science.

I am surprised any one comes to Thailand what ever happened to the famous Thai smile,

What ared you doing here then? Go home

Never ! Thainess ruling tenet: Thais can do no wrong... nor lose face

I am surprised any one comes to Thailand what ever happened to the famous Thai smile,

Its no longer the Thai smile, now its the Thai smirk.

Yeah, but good job by the police. 1 crime solved, another million to go! w00t.gif

Yup they solved one.

Now let's work on making the streets a little safer so that tourists aren't robbed on main city streets.

Was the suspect Thai or from Myanma?

Complacency is not the correct term, 'lack of interest' would be more accurate. They could not give a toss what happens to you unless you offer money.

Robbery is good, poor get rich, police get paid too. Same same, just no problem.

The big problem is that the police and courts seem to believe these stupid excuses and use them as mitigating factors to limit the punishment to a minimum. This is undermining the rule of law.

The once famous Thai smile has now turned into the frown of greed.

He claimed self defence but decided to steal his personal belongings anyway. Hahahaha.
