Cabinet approves the Thai-Cambodia railway bridge

BANGKOK, 30 October 2014 (NNT) – The cabinet has approved a plan for a Thai-Cambodia railway bridge to achieve Southern Economic Corridor connectivity.

In the meeting today, the cabinet approved in principle the construction of the Thai-Cambodia railway bridge as proposed by the Ministry of Transport (MOT).

The MOT had proposed to the cabinet that Thailand commit to the construction of the Aranya Prathet - Khlong Leuk Bridge railway crossing and the Thai-Cambodia railway bridge, as the relationship between Thailand and Cambodia is developing and to facilitate the operations of the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015.

The MOT, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) are now appointed to specify the practical framework and to seek cooperation with Cambodia to reduce any obstacles to working in the border area, as well as considering the maintenance cost of the bridge.

The new bridge will help complete the transportation network of the Southern Economic Corridor, which will facilitate trade, investment, tourism, and passenger transport. A delay in this project would affect the Master Plan for ASEAN Connectivity (MPAC).

Prayuth had better sense than Ahbisit and the PAD to improve relationship with Cambodia. More to gain economically than fighting over PV temple.

And now Cambodia will buy some rails and locomotives....made where ? in Thailand for sure cheesy.gif

The Thais aren't "well trained" enough. Probably Chinese this time. Narrow gauge or standard ?

I know you're being facetious, but anyone taking the trouble to check Google Earth - Aranyaprathet Railway Station will see that there is a right of way (the original) presently cleared that runs through almost to the border and then hits some large buildings. This is going to be interesting.

Thailand is talking HST - High Speed Trains, Standard Gauge (4'81/2") fast trains for passengers and freight and now they are doing a project using narrow gauge (1m) to reach the Cambodia border from Aranyaprathet.

What happens then? Does anyone here really have any idea what the plan is?

Indeed, rat, it reminds me of the various mass transport systems in Bangkok. Build them as independent projects and then spend another few years gradually connecting them up, all after they have been finished naturally.
