Apple email setup

Featured Replies

I can't set up my email account with Apple mail, can't connect to the server (POP), I get an error message that there is a problem with the password. I tried with Thunderbird and I get similar problem. I can access my emails on the internet and also with outlook and an other email client on my PC so it seems to be definitively a Mac problem (I using Maverick)

Does any body had this problem before and successfully solved it ? Your help will be very much appreciated because I'm running out of idea on how to set up my email account on MAC.

I got also an other message "password can not be sent securely" ? I use the same settings for years without problem, what's wrong with Apple ?

Probably nothing wrong with Apple.

Why are you connecting with POP? Don't like IMAP?

You may need to use another PORT address, or enable SSL/TLS encryption.

I'm using the setting given by the people who host our mail. If Apple mail doen't accept POP server why they don't just disable the option ? I'm now trying to use IMAP it seems to work better.

Edited : You seem to be right regarding the SSL encryption\

POP fetches the mail from the mail-server then usually erases it from the mail-server.

IMAP doesn't 'fetch' the email but view the email on the mail-server as if it were a remote database. Mail is kept on the mail-server and can be viewed on multiple machines.

You didn't mention using a 3rd-party MX (mail exchange) in your OP, so didn't know that's what you were doing.

You should be able to use either POP or IMAP, just need to find the Port and Security Encryption type that will function with your email client, ISP filters, and mail exchange host.

On my email client (POP server) I set up the mails to be deleted only when they are deleted from the trash box or after 30 days so I can download them on different computers.

With IMAP I thought that mails would be deleted from the computer if they were deleted from the server, it seems I was wrong.

I checked with the people who host our mails, they don't provide SSL encryption for the POP server, only for IMAP (why I don't know). So now I've set up Apple mail for IMAP and it seems to be working fine. Tomorrow I'm going to do some test to check that emails are not deleted when they shouldn't but so far so good.

So far it seems that Apple mail won't work without encryption (maybe same for Thunderbird, I've to try again when I've time). If you have a way around I would be curious to know but so far IMAP seems to work so lets go with IMAP.

Pop mail and Apple don't mix very well. However, I do use Outlook through M/S Office 2011 on my Mac.
