Police on guard against crimes, accidents on Loy Krathong

BANGKOK, 6 November 2014 (NNT) – The Royal Thai Police is dispatching tens of thousands of police officers and volunteers to festive venues to provide safety for people celebrating the Loy Krathong Festival today.

As hordes of Thai people and foreign tourists are expected to participate in festive activities today in observance of the annual Loy Krathong Day, Acting Deputy National Police Chief Pol Lt Gen Ruangsak Jarit-ek revealed that the Metropolitan Police is deploying 20,000 officers as well as 10,000 volunteers to be stationed at celebration spots across Bangkok.

As for other provinces, the provincial police commanders have been put directly in charge of security operations in their respective areas. He said concentration will be placed on the prevention of crimes and accidents.

Pol Lt Gen Ruangsak added that a joint working team has also been set up with related agencies to put up surveillance in areas near waterways that are hosting Loy Krathong activities this year. Marine and tourist police will be on standby at boat piers and pontoons to enforce security measures.

Parents joining the festivities with their children are advised to closely keep their eyes on their young ones to prevent them from falling into the water and drowning. They are also urged to leave contact information in their children’s pockets in case they get separated in the crowd.
