Featured Replies

Sawadee!

Please share with me any information about Hindu old places in CHonburi or around. Maybe its ia "classic" Buddhist now, but was Hindu before. The best if it will be from 12 centuries or older.

Sure! Its personal little research, so possible some mistakes

The starting point was Khao Kha in Sichon, Nakhon Si Thammarat. It was spiritual center of ancient Tambralinga kingdom. Here you can visit us (we decided to live in Nakhon Si after that), also here I got inspired to visit the others.

1. Phetchabun Province, Si Thep Park Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park

2. Sukhothai Historical Park 3. Phi Mai Historical Park, Korat (Nakhon Ratchasima province) have same story about “Shiva home”
4.Phanom Rung Historical Park, Buriram, Isan Phanom Rung Fair (งานประเพณีขึ้นเขาพนมรุ้ง) It was a Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, and symbolizes Mount Kaylash 5. Prasat Mueang Sing, Kanchanaburi

Out of Thailand:

Preah Vihear Temple, Sisaket, border with Cambo

Wat-Phu LaosMy Son, Champa, Vietnam

Maybe: Wat Phra That Doi Tung Chiang Rai

Forgot to mention: there are nothing comparable in Chonburi what I found

Shall we move this to the Thailand travel Forum? Probably more appropriate!

You wont find anything around Chonburi and BKK. Simply impossible. THe area was part of the sea at that time. As for sites:

Add Nakon Pathom and also Ratchburi to your list for Djavarati sites.

Muang Sema (Sema old city) on the way from Saraburi to Korat as a phantastic reclining budda and some Djavarati artifacts.

You will also enjoy the collection of the nationa museum in bkk.

For the supposed origins of hinduism in the region go to Si Thammarat and the fine collections there and make a stop at Chaya (near Surat) on the way there.

In the north Lamphun is your principal location for such fine pieces and locations.

Preah Vehar is a Cambodian site and no longer directly accessible from Thailand.

In general the various national museums of Thailand are good places to learn more (some false identifications and nationalist myths left aside.....) and see exceptional pieces. You will be surprised what awaits visitors in the small museum at Nakhon Pathom.

If you have enough time, make the trip to Cambodia and Kampong Thom province. A spectacular site nearby one of the early places of what became later on Khmer culture.

As for Sri Thep archaeological park: You can go there by bus. Almost any bus going to Petchabun/Lomsak passes by. Shortly before reaching Sri Thep you need to get off at a crossing, the driver will know. From there another 20 min by motorbike taxi to the site. Part of the site is closed off because of excavations. The large area accessible has very nice art work to admire. Food and drinks available.

Phi Mai is pretty cool. I think the bigger Phanom Rung is the one famous for the light lining up 2 times a year. You can visit their website and it will tell all about it.

Have you been to Angkor Wat? It's one of the most impressive places I've ever been. Mind boggling....

Thanks for advice Craig.

The girl from Korat said that its same phenomenon in Phi Mai, but she don't know when. I see now that in Phanom Rung its occurs 13 of April, maybe its in same date there too (can't find other 2 nd day).

Yes, I've been in Angkor Wat before, but that time was more interested in parties at Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville, so hope to go there again in future.

We have personal things there to explore: on a chosen dates and time by Hindu calendar trying just to be there and "feel" the place. Here in Khao Kha its a different every time. And 18 of Feb should be the main day, as I read: Maha Shivaratri.
