Still, my point being; I went into the newly opened Burger King in Chaweng yesterday. They have some nice, soft cream coloured furnishings by the windows. While I was waiting for my order I noticed three people sitting there, one being topless and really quite sweaty. I asked the manager, as he passed by, if he thought this was acceptable and the assistant manager chipped in with, "Mai pen rai". When she realized I understood what she was saying and asked her if she really thought it was acceptable, she turned on her heels and walked off!

On a beach, in a beach chair, fine, but in a restaurant, where other people are eating?

I make no apologies for having high personal standards. That is the way I was brought up. I am just sorry that the basic standards of common decency and politeness are disappearing.

Nothing surprising here as the quality of the Samui tourist has plummeted the last four years. Almost every restaurant will have a few shirtless yobboes these days and they are mostly Russian and French !

These are the quality tourists that Thailand has been courting.

Burger King is not a restaurant, so you may eat your fries in your birthday suit should you desire.

Suggestion: Like in a casino where they lend you the compulsory jacket and tie in case you show up without, they should keep a stack of (really ugly) T-shirts to throw at those uncovered guests. So they'd have to sit in a specific corner of the restaurant neon green clad, like you'd have to stand in the classroom corner for indecent behaviour.

To be fair, like others said, this is BK and just a stone throw away from the beach, so it's not a big deal really. The weather has also been super hot lately, so there's no wonder the Russians used to Siberian weather is overheating a bit.

Ask any business owner on Samui if they would rather prefer shirtless tourists or no tourists.

The word "high standard" + BK doesn't really work together.

IMO the 'no shirts or shoes' brigade are uncannily tied to the full moon cycle.

It's called hygiene and smelly hairy armpits are not compatible with food and this also includes singlets and if I was shown a seat in an aircraft with with a yobboe wearing a singlet sitting next to me. I would insist on another seat. Likewise do not expect to conduct official business here with no shirt or a singlet as you will be shown the door ! It says a lot for how you were brought up, maybe you never had parents ?

Upcountry at some local somtum neighbourhood stall, there will be shirtless people.

In Brazil, a very hot country, nobody can enter a restaurant without shirt or shoes, only seating on outside tables and by the beach, even if its can be semi naked on the sand.. I agree that restaurants is the least place to show bad manners....and "tatoos". Unfortunately some people likes that.

I noticed in the other thread with old pics from Samui, and I'm pretty sure most farangs way back then were shirtless too. But of course there where no burger fast food joint back then. But I'm sure there were farangs eating shirtless at the Thai cheap charlie restaurants.

Maybe it's not the shirtless tourists which are new, but these tourists with "high standards" complaining about things which has been going on for a long time.

Smart casual shorts as a uniform is not the same as shirtless with your beer gut hanging out and not to mention sweaty underarms.

My point is that the standards in a fast food burger joint near the beach in a tropical tourist destination island is a bit different than elsewhere. So you better get used to it, or find some other "finer dining" to eat.

These people may already be sweating and putting on a t-shirt won't certainly help at all. So sweaty smelly shirtless farangs, not OK, but if they put on t-shirt which will be soaked in sweat and smelled perhaps worse, that would suddenly make any difference?? Will putting on a t-shirt make smelly armpits go away??

Or do you suggest they head back to their hotel, then take a shower, and change clothes and then come back to that high standard fast food joint and get their burger? By the time they make their way back to this joint, they're be soaked in sweat again.

Even the finest restaurant on this island won't mind if you come in Hawaiian shirt and shorts and sandals and you expect "high standards" in a BK joint?

(Fishermans pants, no shirt & bare feet all around the supermarket. Staff clearly notice & don't like it but have ever had the gumption to chuck 'em out!).

Have seen many old and ugly Farangs at Tesco Lotus with young Thai women. But it's ok
