The Meller's chameleon is the largest of the chameleons not native to Madagascar. Their stout bodies can grow to be up to two feet (two-thirds of a meter) long and weigh more than a pound (one-half kilogram).

Many Thais appear allergic to science, or apparently even Google.

Monitor lizard.... it's the only thing near that size which could occur here.

2m long and only 8kg... !

BS :)

The largest species of chameleon (Furcifer oustaleti) only grows to 70 cm, so whatever this creature is, it's not a chameleon (or its length has been measured in penis inches).

There's a photo of the Iguana on Bangkok Post.

A Danish man finds a giant iguana in a roadside forest in Kalasin as he and his Thai wife ride a motorcycle to a fresh market Thursday morning. The lizard is two metres in length and weighs eight kilogrammes.

Arroy

It does appear to be an iguana (a water monitor, which I suggested rather confidently before I saw the picture, does not have the frill along the back).

I wonder where it escaped from (iguanas are native to South and Central America and the Caribbean).

I've seen a few couple of Iguanas out and about. I saw a pretty big one in Chonburi once, But I agree it would have been an escapee.

Check the local Zoos to see if they have had a break-out? Does it not have an ankle bracelet? ;)

I see someone has caught a wallaby just outside Bangkok. How cosmopolitan the fauna is becoming!
