BANGKOK, 12 Dec 2014 (NNT) – The Ministry of Transport has approved the proposed fare hike for meter taxis registered in Bangkok.

According to the Ministry of Transport, it is time to allow meter taxi drivers to adjust the fare rates considering the higher cost of living and an increase in energy prices. The Ministry has decided to revoke its 2008's announcement regarding the fare rates of Bangkok-registered meter taxis with a capacity of seven persons.

The new meter fare starts at 35 baht just the same. A customer riding a distance between one and 10 kilometers will be charged 5.50 baht per kilometer.

An additional charge between 6.50 and 10.50 baht per kilometer will be collected from the customer after the 10-kilometer mark, depending on the distance. In case the taxi is at a standstill or unable to proceed faster than six kilometers per hour, a fee of two baht per minute will be added to the customer’s bill.

Customers calling a cab via a taxi service center will have to pay an extra fee of 20 baht. Those using the service from Don Muang International Airport and Suvarnabhumi Airport will be charged 50 baht more for the trip. The new fare rates will be effective tomorrow.

  • Think, it's a fair fare increase, considering no increase for 6 yrs.

  • but what has it increase from??? that would be nice to know.

  • What a garbled report. I await a proper and precise description of the changes, because what I see here is just nonsensical.

Giggle, giggle, really the ministry is only allowing the increase because they can't stand the heat from the taxi drivers anymore. And I thought the cost of living and energy price increases had been so fantastically managed by the govt (kept low) that those factors were not big cost players. I just love how govt agencies will flip-flop on an issue once they are pressured at the right time and in the right way. Even with the fare increases, the fares are still cheap compared to other countries.

How can all the taxi meters be changed so quickly ? Quite impossible

I presume Phuket is not part of Thailand and has no Royal connection.

Governor Nisit, please note.

but what has it increase from??? that would be nice to know.

Seems like another opportunity for a free-for-all. Lots of drivers will take advantage of confusion.

A fair fare at the fayre for the fairies.

Should be interesting to see implemented. Can't wait for my next taxi journey. I don't mind a fare increase, it is long overdue but to see it implemented with little to no warning....hmmmm....

Thank you Prayuth.

You have return happiness to thousands of taxi drivers.

Thank you again 3 times.

Every day I see on TV that oil prices are lowest in 5 years, yet the report speaks of increase in energy costs. Am I really dumb or what?

Even taxi drivers has to eat, must be that kind of energy.

To be honest, without a raise in taxi fares for so long must be tough for taxi drivers.

At least the raise doesn't seem to be made by greedy people.

It doesn't look to be a very big increase, should indeed only add about 10% to most journeys.

When they refuse to use the meter next time, it'll go from 300 baht to 400 baht. Simple.

Rise in fare, should also mean rise in service and courtesy.

We were told in the recent past that a fair increase would be accepted only after the taxis were inspected and cleaned up. Did that happen??

I'll bet it's a shorter metre they use to measure the journey!

Both of you are dreaming!!

Am I really dumb or what?

Yes.

The taxi fares have not increased in 22 years.

That's not true, a few years back there was a similar slight increase. The main change was the number of KM on the flag call of 35 baht,

At 35 baht for the flag down I have no complaints the journey to Don Mueng was still 187 baht from the 4 Seasons and with the toll it still ranks as one of the cheapest taxi ride in this region

What a garbled report. I await a proper and precise description of the changes, because what I see here is just nonsensical.

How could it have been clearer, it gave a precise formula to determine the fare....anyone with intelligence above the threshold for being mentally retarded should be able to understand it.

With the wage increases, think of the influx of taxis about to be on the road lol

It seems very straight forward to me. Pretty simple to understand, really.

That's definitely not true.

Here's my question: How is the new fee schedule loaded into the taxi meters since it occurring so fast and there are tens of thousands of metered taxis?

I would assume and hope the meters are calibrated/fee schedule loaded by some govt agency and associated documentation applied to the meters to hopefully prevent the meters from being calibrated/hacked/modified to read a higher fare than allowed by the govt. Or do taxi drivers/companies just get to set the meters to calculate the new fare schedule and then we must trust the drivers/companies.

What a garbled report. I await a proper and precise description of the changes, because what I see here is just nonsensical.

Are you in Grade 2?

And what about enforcement of laws regarding Taxis " refusing to take passengers" and "switching on meter" , a telephone number to call where it my be logged and forgotten about? Pathetic country
