Thai government to spread moral message via online chat `stickers'

Bangkok: -- Thailand's military government is to spread its leader's moral teachings via customised figure icons on the chat and messaging application LINE, a report said Wednesday.

The virtual "stickers" will be made available on December 30 as a "New Year’s present" to the Thai people, Kapook news website reported.

They will depict the 12 core values that Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha has said Thais should adhere to.

These include "obedience to seniority in society" and a "correct understanding of democracy."

LINE is one of the most popular instant messaging applications in Thailand.

The application, which makes prominent use of playful, sometimes animated graphics, known as stickers, has over 18 million users in Thailand according to the media website Tech in Asia.

The military, which seized power in May, produced a series of Army Stickers in July for people to use for a small fee in LINE messaging and chats.

I am quite certain that the 7 mio aren't earmarked just for the creation and design of the stickers, but also for dissemination, promotion and advertising costs.

Seems like a lot of money, but realistically $200,000 for an entire campaign is rather conservative.

To us with a western mindset this might sound frivolous and ridiculous (I don't use Line, consider it superfluous, and barely use emojis) but it's extremely popular with Thai and Asian cultures, as are the use of Line stickers. So, as a promotion and branding exercise, not such a bad idea, really.

Now, just waiting for the Thaksin Line sticker pack.

17-12-2557-13-50-18-wpcf_728x409.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The Ministry of Information, Communication, and Technology's (ICT) plan to pay seven million baht for the creation of "12 Thai Values" LINE stickers and distributed to users free of charge has gone viral on the social media with mixed reaction.

Thai netizens questioned if such plan is worth the budget, while some said it would not help much to propagate the Thai Values through such channel.

Reaction on the social network emerged after the Ministry of Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT) revealed on its website to hire Line Company (Thailand) Ltd at 7,117,400 baht to create Line stickers for the” 12 Thai Values” for free download among Line users.

Posters on leading Pantip.com website questioned the spending of such amount is a waste of money.
They said since the budget was derived from taxes, it should be spent on other necessary project to develop the country.
Some also argued that this would not help much to propagate the Thai Values.

On Facebook pages, many also said the government’s resorting to LINE showed that its PR team was inefficient to do the job.
But many supported the plan saying it could greatly help to promote the values among youths.

Besides, they said such amount of money was not much but a normal sum which is spent by a company to promote its sales and corporate image.

Earlier the ICT Deputy Permanent Secretary Mrs Songpon Komolsuradet said the stickers will be available for free on December 30 to give to the people as New Year gift.

It is part of a set of “New Year’s gift” for all Thais.

The free virtual “stickers” represent Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha’s moral teachings.

The stickers depict the “Twelve Values” that Gen Prayut wants all Thais to practice, she said and called the project “a gift for Thai people” on the occasion of the New Year.

She said the ministry wanted to help Thai people know more about the values so that they will send the stickers to each other on New Year days.

The Twelve Values are the following:

>
> 1. Loyalty to the Nation, the Religion, and the Monarchy
>
> 2. Honesty, sacrifice, endurance, and noble ideology for the greater good
>
> 3. Gratitude for parents, guardians, and teachers
>
> 4. Diligence in acquiring knowledge, via school studies and other methods
>
> 5. Preserving the Thai customs and tradition
>
> 6. Morality and good will for others
>
> 7. Correct understanding of democracy with the King as Head of State
>
> 8. Discipline, respect for law, and obedience to the older citizens
>
> 9. Constant consciousness to practice good deeds all the time, as taught by His Majesty the King
>
> 10. Practice of Self-Sufficient Economy in accordance with the teaching of His Majesty the King
>
> 11. Physical and mental strength. Refusal to surrender to religious sins.
>
> 12. Uphold the interest of the nation over oneself.
Currently public schools and state agencies have hung banners listing the twelve values on their premises. State agencies have also produced a poem, song, and 12-part film based on the Twelve Values.

LINE is one of the most popular messenger applications in social media obsessed Thailand. The instant messaging application is known for its “stickers,” or sets of cartoons and emojis that can be purchased from an online store.

Trust me - a lot of Thais think it's frivolous and ridiculous, too.

22 million Thais using it at last count. Sounds like a lot do not think it is frivolous and ridiculous. I travel the world and use it everywhere.

I can make free international calls to friends/family who use it (like Skype).

Many may not know; this application was borne a result of the Japanese communications infrastructure left in shambles after Tohuko earthquake in 2011.

Business size cards with the "12 Values" imprinted on would be useful when encountering those who cheat, overcharge, steal, scam, hate, lie, discriminate, etc. I think I will order 200 for starters.

Lol I just watched King Junta on TV this morning. He talks to people like he owns them, yells at them like little people and rolls his eyes with distain when someone says something he doesnt like. He's quality leadership thats for sure. As they say you cant make this poop up.

Either you don't meet many Thais in a position to lie, cheat, scam, discriminate and steal from you or you need to reassess your order size!
