BANGKOK, Dec 18 -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is confident of peace and order in Thailand during the New Year celebrations.

He vowed to take tough action against anyone planning to cause disturbances or violence.

After chairing a meeting of the National Security Council, Gen Prayut said he ordered the authorities and the armed forces to prevent violence and incidents of unrest and said he is confident that this New Year's period would be free of such violence as happened in 2007.

He said that the National Council for Peace and Order, the Royal Thai Police Office, the Ministry of Interior and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration stepped up security measures and had surveillance cameras installed to cover all areas.

Anyone who planned to create any violent incident could not escape, he said.

"We attach importance to all parties and all matters, be they politically motivated incidents or those resulting from boldness. I am not uttering a threat but I will take decisive actions against those who will trouble the public because they are not considered as patriots," the prime minister said.

He ruled out the possibility of any terror attack, saying Thailand was not a target and intelligence reports did not show the possibility.

The prime minister denied any knowledge about the report that US authorities tortured their detained suspects in Thailand. He said that Thailand only handed over suspects as the US requested and had no idea what it did with the people afterward.

"The Thai government is not responsible for the matter. Please do not exaggerate on it. Otherwise, Thailand will have more enemies," the prime minister said. (MCOT online news)

His daily speeches, rather than addressing the mess Thailand is in economically, simply consist of thinly veiled threats not to challenge him and attempts to brainwash the population further with principles etc.

I have genuinely never seen a leader so out of his depth.

Doing whatever the US asks doesn't always pay, or does it ? I'm sure someone was paid.

Now I'm worried ... why wouldn't New Year have been peaceful anyway? Or was this a not-so-veiled threat at the police/reds or perhaps the lunatics down south not to try anything?

Well he did say, unquivalently, and rather bombastically and unemotionally, that there is no threat to Thailand like there was to Sydney.

He obviosusly knows more than NSY and the CIA combined. giggle.gif

Cameras everywhere and no one can escape?

How about a curfew for new years eve? That would guarantee peace for sure.

"He ruled out the possibility of any terror attack"

Does this include the deep south?

A walking PR disaster, who is losing it by the minute!!coffee1.gif

If he is that confident the obviously he has no plans what-so-ever of imposing the proposed ban on alcohol over the New Year period......................coffee1.gif

Sober riots by cold turkeys can be dangerous.

so if an official says it , we can be assured the opposite will happen

That's what could make him even more dangerous if he feels threatened over his position and authority and does what he thinks it takes to be in complete charge.

" Thailand will have MORE enemies... "

Does this mean LoS actually has enemies now ? Hard to believe as I thought everybody loved this country and was in complete awe of all it is, does and how it is governed.

Awe or should that be Aw ? !

So you genuinely were not in Thailand from 5 August 2011 – 7 May 2014, or had no idea of what was going on in the political arena.

If you were in Thailand back then you would have seen an awesome display of someone being even more out of her depth.

You can deny all you like, but it did happen.

Yes and no imho...

She was very busy shopping and visiting OTOP outlets but she didn't make numerous idiotic statements on a daily basis...

"He vowed to take tough action against anyone planning to cause disturbances ..."

The rubber farmers have WARNED Prayuth that they will get a minimum government subsidy based on a price of Bt80/kg to guarantee a 30% profit margin or they will hold mass public rallies the beginning of the New Year. Thus far, Gen. Prayuth has only offered Bt60/kg. Then we'll see either Gen. Prayuth the Action Man or Prayuth the Paper Tiger.
