Dentist For Very Nervous Patient.

My wife has a phobia about injections, this has only developed recently, and it is mostly regarding the administration of the local anaesthetic. i.e. needles.

Does anyone know of a hospital dental clinic that has the facilities to treat patients under mild IV sedation or using nitrous oxide or a dentist in a hospital or office that specialises in the treatment of very nervous patients / needle phobics.

Injections? they often don't bother! I can recommend the lady at Nakonthorn Hospital on rama 2 just across from Bic C she is very re assuring and gentle

I'd suggest seeking help with the fear after all its only in your mind and if you overcome that you'll do much better than trying to find the perfect Dentist

I've been flying all my life, but a while back I developed an irrational fear of flying. My Doc gave me some pills (sorry I don't recall the name), and I flew without any fear.. since then I've never had any problem.

there is something they can put on the gum before the injection than you don't feel the needle piercing in.

Or if there is just a small treatment, just do it without. It usually doesn't hurt very much.

(note the small treatment......there are other things that hurt like hell)

Thanks is actually get best bet. I would be surprised if any dentist agreed to use any gas or anything for a simple injection.

Yes you'll need to contact the large hospitals dental clinics and ask for IV valium, I've had dental work done several times this way, small prick in the forearm as they insert the IV drip and seconds later you're out of it. When you come to it's all over. Very nice way to get major dental treatment.

I asked my dentist once about nitrous oxide. He said he could do it but I would have to pay the fee for an anaesthetist which would nearly double the cost. It also has to be arranged well in advance.

Light sedation is the modern way to go and just as painless.

If they tell you to pull out 5 teeth, go to 2-3 different dentists and ask them for other options.

It might be complete correct that these 5 teeth must be pulled out, but it might be just a money making and something other is possible. I have 3 or 4 teeth that must be pulled out since 20 years. Now they are considered as healthy and good.

My mother has wisdom teeth that must be pulled out since 50 years. Now they tell her that she is lucky to have that healthy tooth.....

So go to several dentists, with every X-Ray and explanation you learn to read the X-Ray and ask better questions....worth to do before pulling 5 teeth

THis guy specializes in phobia, maybe you should check him out, he worked on some of my friends and he is very good

Was this in Thailand? Because as this issue has come up many times it would be good to know specific hospitals/clinics/dentists. From past threads, people have found it difficult to ocate dentists willing to provide sedation.

Caveat: For safety reasons, should only do this in the dental dept of a hospital so that emergency care is immediately on hand. There is always a small risk with IV sedation. For which reason its use should be reserved for people with serious phobias such that they would otherwise be unable to receive needed dental care.

Hi Sheryl, I had IV Valium once at a dental clinic in Pattaya, it was some years ago and I cannot give any specific details but I went to the clinic and told the dentist what I wanted. The dentist made an appointment for me the following day and arranged for an anesthetist to attend and give me the IV drip.

More recently I had sedation at Khon Kaen dental hospital. In that case it wasn't actually Valium but a similar sedative.

If I needed any major dental work in the future I would approach the dental dept of hospitals in my area and arrange for an anesthetist from that hospital to attend to me. I believe the dental dept of most, if not all, major hospitals can/will provide this. It's just a matter of going there and discussing your needs with the dentists.

One more point about dental treatment in LOS. I have a past history of pharmaceutical drug abuse (all behind me now) but because of my past history I have a higher than average tolerance to pain-killers. When I need dental treatment I always explain this to the dentist and tell them I need a higher dose injection than the average patient. I've found dentists in LOS very helpful with this and it seems they give me 50% more pain-killer and can carry out an extraction or regular filling OK.

In Australia it's terrible. I explain to the dentists but they still only give me the regular amount, or perhaps a tiny increase, and cause me considerable pain. I imagine they are under strict government controls and their hands are tied in this matter.

We are looking for treatment in the dental department of a hospital rather than a street clinic, and ideally nitrous oxide would be better than IV sedation seeing as IV involves needles which is the thing that my wife is fearful of, it is not the dentistry, just the needles. She will need root canal on a cracked molar followed by a crown.

For IV sedation i think you can only have that done at the dental department in hospitals but i know some stand alone dental facilities that give gas sedation.

Yes I believe that is the case. Mind you it would be very unwise to have IV sedation anywhere but a hospital.

i am in pattaya and gag every time they work on my mouth

my dentist who is pretty good says i am the only one

i now avoid any serious work until absolutely necessary

i am actually consdiering being knocked out before the work is done

BUT

1-i dont think they do that here

and

2-maybe better to be conscious just in case, even doctors make mistakes and it's good to keep and eye out

I have been looking through the archives to see what treatment is available regarding sedation . I have exactly the same dental problem as you wife . I have been to the dentist on 3 occasions and each time the injections did not work to numb the area and the last time I was given 4 injections . The pain on the last attempted treatment was the worse pain I have ever felt because the injections had zero effect on me . I shouted out in agony and also swore the f word several times and said to the dentist  " no more , stop "  Now I am scared to go to the dentist as I could not go through that again . However I think sedation may be the answer . Can you please tell me how your wife got on and where she had the treatment and how much . Many thanks in advance .

She stated her condition and we were recommended to go to their sukhumvit 5/nana branch, which was a larger facility, to avail of a gas sedation treatment prior to her extractions. Everything went well and she never felt any discomfort during the entire treatment.

Sorry, i forgot to type...she had extractions (3 teeth). But I'm sorry i never asked her how much she paid in total.

She eventually had the work done in the UK by a NHS dentist who was patient and understanding. The work was done using nitrous oxide and  local anaesthesia and my wife was very receptive of the treatment.
