Hi

Ok if you read any paper in the western world you will often come accross articles regarding the growing trend of people taking freelance work and living almost anywhere in the world. Now knowing that thailand can be paradise im sure their are many you in thailand doing this type of work.

So i would like to get an idea of what type of freelancing you or your friends are into? and how did you get set up in such a cushy number? Im sure most of you had lots of contacts or even your own business before you left for paradise? Maybe there are even some people who managed to start freelancing after the arrived in Thailand?

Well anyway just interested i have no skill to offer so i wont be in competition with you :o

Thanks

I'm a web-software developer. Mostly write programs using PHP/JS/MySQL, rarely Perl, Python and PostgreSQL. I also run several sites that bring me some money.

If you want to have such freelance job you can finish special courses to learn PHP/MySQL, but in my humble opinion if you want to be a professional programmer you need at least B.S. in Computer Arts.

I prefer to work in office and its a bit hard for me to work in a hotel/condo. But renting an office is expensive for me alone.

Also I was looking for some appropriate job in Thailand, but I guess its impossible for farang.

My job title in Thailand is "research and development"

I dont know what this means but it looks good on my work permit.

I guess it's just one of those titles that Thai's cannot have or do with any conviction.

I dont have any qualifications to back up this fancy title but I guess that is normal here.

It's not impossible, in fact there was a job offer for a PHP/MySQL programmer recently in the TV classifieds, but the downside was, they offered only 20000 Baht per month for a full-time position, non-negotiable. :o

I'm not sure they wish to hire a farang... The salary is not a dream really, but the employer provides a work permit so you can save money on visas also.

BTW, as I know, the average salary in BKK for Thai programmers who got M.S. in C.A. is about 20-24K Baht...

I don't call it freelancing, rather I refer to what I do as "Portfolioing'.

I'm a Consultant Engineer and I sell my services outside of my 35 hours in the office to clients in the Oil/Gas/Petro Chem industry.

I’ work in a very specialised area of Process Engineering so findng clients tends to be by personal contact/past projects.

Yes those light poles can come in handy after 1 am. Hmm…infact come to think of it…they are more sturdy for us farangs than the silver one inside anyway!

I am pursuing a telecommuting oppurtunity with my current employer. I've offered to make reasonable concessions if I can work 100% remote. We are working on a big project right now and my prescense is required on site but after this when things stabilize it might happen. I won't know until Late December. This setup is my dream, the ability to live anywhere and not tied to a desk. IF I lived in Thailand even if I had to take a 50% cut, which I won't have to, I'd be living a great life.

I am a portfolio accounting, perfomance analysis system administrator. It isn't what I was originally hired to do, I sort of grew into the role. There are many who are better at finance or technology than me, but not many who know enough of both to do what I do so I have some bargaining power.

Smart thought, woodaa

we hire freelancers around the globe at the price of peanuts, use them and pay them. If you see web artist or programmer in bangkok looking for job - cross the street. There're more on the Internet websites with portfolios and refferences than in whole LOS

Except that Guesthouse is not here, at least not at the moment...Rome I think if I recall correctly?

I do consulting in marketing and strategy, focused on database and CRM programs; not the IT side but the business process and philosophy side. Occasionally assist in product development (currently doing that for 1 client), PR and events. Also do some entertainment industry work (non smut stuff). Mostly in the property development, retail and branded good market.

Have one client that pays a decent retainer each month; any other work is windsurf/sailing/snowboard trip overseas/buying new suits money.

Not hard to find, while I am part Thai, my Thai is pretty hopeless. All comes down to building relationships and knowing how to explain what are often fairly basic concepts to senior managers who know little about marketing. Did the same job in NZ prior to this although not as a consultant.

I gave up the entertainment industry work for the most part to do this, and started off earning hardly anything, I think my first job was paying less than 20k a month once I worked out how long it took me (another person had negotiated the terms, and it ended up dragging out). But being somewhat professional pays off; that same client is now my main source of income, and a mighty good one too. Even as a consultant, I still get bonuses (not in the contract).

I have a few friends who teach english; the smarter ones with careers back home who taught english as something to do while they find another job have mostly learned at least a tiny bit of Thai, learned how not to look like a foreigner idiot, built up a network and been able to end up back doing what they were doing there - finance, marketing, that sort of thing. Some people enjoy teaching english, and they are happy doing that.

As a non-expat pulling big wages, have to be willing to do a bit of brown nosing Thai style, same same anyway. I give know how you na. :o
