Christmas tree catches fire at Siam station walkway

BANGKOK: -- An artificial Christmas tree with LED lights caught fire causing panic among weekend shoppers and BTS sky train commuters at Siam Square One late Sunday afternoon.

The fire at the 5-metre high Christmas tree happened on the elevated walkway linking Siam Square One and BTS Siam station at about 3.00 pm.

The fire sent black smokes billowing into the sky, and causing shoppers and commuters to run down the elevated walkway,

But security guards of the shopping centre and BTS and Pathumwan district volunteers managed to put it out 15 minutes later.

Nobody was injured in the fire.

The entire Christmas tree was burnt out remaining only the steel frame. The roof of the walkway was also slightly damaged by the fire.

It was not immediately known the cause of the fire but initial inspection of the artificial tree showed electrical overload of the decoration lights
might cause short-circuit and fire.

The walkway connecting Siam Square One and BTS Siam stationwas closed for the forensic police to find the exact cause.

Divine retribution from the guy in the sky, likely he was annoyed by not being able to find 3 wise men or a virgin in Thailand for his nativity play......

Have to look at the bright side, taking down the Christmas tree was never an enjoyable experience. Much easier to just sweep the remains into the dust pan. thumbsup.gif

Thai ereclisicktee no need Earth.

Wonderful.

Thais and electricity certainly do not mix.

Why have to jump for Christmas in an Asian Buddhist country? aaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA marketing

If I see how my father and law connected all the LED light chains around the house I am not surprised at all..

Glad no one was injured.

This seems to be another opportunity for humour by the juvenile thinkers who seem to ignore the damage to property, disruption of service and the potential for injury or death to others.

But my wife assures me this is because electricity in Thailand is different to everywhere else.

I swear, if you made that up , and tried to put it on Facebook,, no one would believe you.

Christmas 2005, Koh Samet, sat in a beach front restaurant. Anyway, they've got this Christmas tree there and it's got fairy lights all over. A dog decides to do what a dog does and licks the metal trunk of this artificial tree only to become stuck to the trunk by way of electrocution.

A kindly tourist then attempts to rescue the beast only to become stuck to the dog . . . by way of electrocution.

Upon seeing this unfortunate chain reaction another guy pushes the tourist off the dog.

Sadly the dog passed away.

how reassuring

Perhaps our schadenfreude glands are just more developed than yours.

Personally, I found it funny.

See, I found that really funny as well.

...well except the dog dying...but the rest of it was funny.

15 minutes to put out a tree??!! By then it would be ashes.

If I see how my father and law connected all the LED light chains around the house I am not surprised at all..

Your father had assistance from the police to do that?

I see what you did there.

Funny.

Crazy. My friend walked by while this was happening and posted a picture on Facebook. Now I know the rest of the story.

Even a made-in-China flammable plastic Christmas tree has a rudimentary artificial intelligence...and it knew it was out of place in Bangkok and being pimped for profits...

I think it committed suicide.
