teatree
In the past I have bought 2 retractable hoses from Homepro (the ones that you wind up with a handle) and have found that the frame causes them to kink, meaning that you have to fully extend the hose for it to work and bend down to get the kinks out. It looks like a very poor design to me. Are there any that I can get that don't do this? Or is a bare hose the only way to go?
dave_boo
Have you tried leaving water running through them as you wind them up? Maybe that will provide enough support to the hose to keep it from collapsing?
teatree
Have you tried leaving water running through them as you wind them up? Maybe that will provide enough support to the hose to keep it from collapsing? The problem is that the kinks are really well developed - the design of the housing is such that you would think it was designed to put a kink in the hose. Thanks anyway. JohnC
have a look at Lazada for retractable hoses. Edited December 30, 2014 by JohnC
GarryP
Having the same problem with my HomePro hose. Purely caused by my son who rewinds carelessly, not making sure that all kinks are sorted out as the hose is wound in. I've stopped saying anything about it because it would be the same as banging my head against the wall and at least he does water the garden without me needing to ask him to do it.
Popular Post xen
Junk the wind up contraption and coil your hose into a coil about one metre diameter or lay out flat (along a garden edge where you will not trip over it ) . That is how I was taught to treat hoses by the older gardeners when I began gardening many years ago and I still do it . First thing you are taught as an apprentice gardener. The only time you use one of those wind up hose contraptions is if you using an all rubber hose, not a pvc hose. If you get kinks in your pvc hose then you need to lay it out in the sun in a straight line until the pvc looses it shape memory and returns to its non kinked form. I also don't have the patience to stuff around with the wind up contraptions , with a bit of practice you will be able to drain, coil and hang a hose before you have turned the handle thirty turns.
NE1
There are these things , I have seen them in Homepro etc but have never used one. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/50FT-EXPANDING-GARDEN-HOSE-PIPE-FLEXIBLE-NON-KINK-EXPANDABLE-HOSEPIPE-DD31-/361008027332
craigt3365
I bought one of these and it lasted about a year. Started leaking in various spots and like you say, always kinked. I now have this clear house that's sold by the meter. Never kinks. Just do like Xen says and coil it up properly. It's lasted in the sun now for 4 years. Since this isn't really about farming, let's move this over to the real estate and housing forum. Topic Moved.
teatree
Took the retractable back and got a normal hose. Works much better. My advice is don't bother with a retractable.

IMHO
We use click fittings with an in-built stop valve on the end of our hoses. When we're done with them, we first detach the spray head, which leaves the hose pressurized with water. We then turn off the tap and wind it up. This way, the hose always has ~30PSI of pressure in it, and it becomes very kink resistant.

Even better is to coil it in a figure of eight. That way you don't have to twist it when coiling and uncoiling. Looks untidy and takes up more room but solves a lot of problems. Thai hosepipe is rubbish anyway.

They have them at HomePro. 10 meters if I recall correctly. Too short for me but I was sorely tempted. No need to wait to get back to the UK. Extra baggage allowance?

Even Tesco have them, they work really well and, when contracted, coil easily and neatly. They have the regular push fittings on the ends, so joining two for more length is a piece of cake. You do need decent water pressure to make them expand mind. Wifey loves hers
