chiangrai
Happy new year, I am trying to set my files to open in the same way every time, which is in "context" view. I watched some videos on youtube about how to do it but it never works. I have windows 8.1 which I use in desktop mode with "classic shell" .I'm trying to get the files to open in context and to take away the "length" of time displayed. Any tips.............................

Xircal
Maybe if you provided a link to the YT video which purportedly shows how to achieve what you're trying to do, it would give us an inkling of what it is you're on about.
chiangrai
O.K, Sorry for the lack of clarity. When you open a file you can chose to view it in a number of ways, details, list, context etc.......... I want my files to open in the "context" view instead of having to change it manually every time by pressing View and then Context. Also when I change my files to Context" view it shows the "lenght" of the file in minutes and the size of the file in "mb". I want to set it to show the size and not the lenght. Sorry again about my lack of terminology and thanks for your patience.
BB1950
Chaingrai, You never cease to amaze me. I'm still not understanding what you're talking about. Files can be 'opened' with several kinds of applications, depending on the file type. What kind of file or application are you talking about? I'm guessing since you mentioned minutes, you must be talking about 'opening' in some kind of audio/video player. chiangrai
I mean opening files and folders with "file explorer" I want them to open the same way each time and not to have to adjust the "view" by pressing "view" and then "context"

BB1950
Okay, I just figured out what you're talking about. You wanting to change the default Folder View to a custom view. This should help you out: How to "Apply to Folders" a Custom View to All Folders with Same Template in Windows 8 Folder View - Set a Default for all Folders in Windows 8 Edited January 3, 2015 by BB1950
chiangrai
Thanks BB,that was exactly what I needed. Now,for the files themselves,is there a way to change what information is shown on them when they're in the folder. The "lenght",size, date modified etc are writen on them. I want to set them so that only the size and name is shown. Thanks again for your patience.

Follow the Add or Remove Columns link in step 2 of the instructions to get more detail on how remove the columns you don't want. chiangrai
Right, I've went through those links and as far as I can see the columns can't be changed in any other "view" than "details". Correct me if I'm wrong. This is only a small issue compared to what I have already changed, I'm happy with what I have. Thanks again, that's made a huge difference. BB1950
Yup, you appear to be correct. I just read the note: "Columns are only available when using Details view in File Explorer". Sorry, I misled you. I normally don't do what you're trying to do.

Set the layout to "Details" view and then right click the description: "Name" (column) and select "More" at the bottom of the context menu which appears. In the screenshot, you get the menu shown on the right hand side of it from where you can choose to remove or add data.
