Cambodia records 2.78 million registered automobiles, motorcycles as of last year

PHNOM PENH, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia reported 2.78 million registered automobiles and motorcycles as of last year, up 15 percent year-on-year, said the figures of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport Monday.

The figures showed that the Southeast Asian nation has about 429,000 cars, buses, and trucks by last year, up 5 percent year-on- year and some 2.35 million motorcycles, up about 17 percent.

Vehicles are mostly purchased from Japan, Thailand, South Korea, China, the United States, Germany and Britain. Japan-branded vehicles are the most popular ones in Cambodia.

"The figures have not included thousands of vehicles on sales at stores and showrooms across the country," Preap Chanvibol, chief of the ministry's Transport Department, said

The growth of vehicles is one of the factors that cause a rise in road traffic deaths. According to the report of the National Police, road traffic crashes killed 2,148 people last year, up 13 percent year-on-year.
